[SMM Stainless Steel Flash] NAS Stainless Mill Expansion Strengthens Acerinox's US Growth Strategy

Published: Aug 18, 2026 09:28
Acerinox's North American Stainless (NAS) mill expansion in Kentucky commenced operations at the start of 2026, adding 308,000 short tons per year of capacity and lifting the mill's annual run rate from 1.54 million to 1.85 million short tons, following delays from crane repair work at the site. Acerinox highlighted the US market's superior price stability versus Europe as a key investment rationale. US apparent stainless demand fell 11% YoY in Q1 but improved 5% QoQ, with inventories 7% below historical averages and deliveries growing in recent months — suggesting the market may be moving past its weakest cycle point. NAS operated at 80% utilization in the quarter excluding the new expansion. In high-performance alloys, weaker oil and gas and chemical processing demand has been partially offset by expectations of stronger aerospace demand supporting Haynes International, while AI data center power infrastructure needs could drive additional demand for high-temperature alloys in industrial gas turbines. Acerinox's strategy centers on two pillars: expanding US stainless capacity through NAS and positioning high-performance alloys around aerospace and energy infrastructure growth.

[SMM Nickel Flash News] Weekly Weather Outlook (August 18–23)
Indonesia’s key nickel-producing regions are expected to see generally favorable weather conditions this week. Central Sulawesi (Morowali) is forecast to experience minimal rainfall, supporting largely normal mining and logistics operations. Halmahera is also expected to see limited rainfall, with no significant weather-related disruptions anticipated. In the Philippines, Palawan is forecast to receive around 40–50 mm of rainfall, with moderate showers potentially affecting mine-road transportation and vessel loading, particularly toward the weekend. Surigao is expected to receive around 25–35 mm, with intermittent showers and a higher likelihood of rainfall on August 22–23, potentially causing minor disruptions to mining and logistics. Zambales faces a similar rainfall pattern at around 25–35 mm, with more frequent showers toward the weekend that could temporarily affect mining, transportation and port operations.
