[Magnesium Ingot Quotations Edged Lower, Prices Fell While Volumes Rose and Deals Remained Temporarily Stable] The magnesium ingot market consolidated on a weak note, with mainstream quotations for 99.90% magnesium ingot in the Fugu area at 15,900-16,000 yuan/mt. More low-priced cargoes were available, and the transaction center edged down slightly; FOB was quoted at $2,250-2,350/mt. On the supply side, sellers proactively cut prices amid inventory pressure, while downstream buyers entered the market to restock at an appropriate time. Overall transactions showed a pattern of lower prices and higher volumes, and acceptance of 15,850 yuan/mt was moderate. However, demand remained weak. In markets outside China, affected by high ocean freight rates and exchange-rate fluctuations, firm orders still left room for negotiation, and new orders were scarce. In the short term, it was expected to remain in the doldrums.

SMM Flash Update, August 17:

Today, mainstream quotations for GB-standard 99.90% magnesium ingot in the Fugu area were 15,900-16,000 yuan/mt, and mainstream quotations for GB-standard 99.80% magnesium ingot in the Fugu area were 15,850-15,950 yuan/mt; China FOB prices were $2,250-2,350/mt.

Today, the magnesium ingot market overall remained in the doldrums. Supply side, primary magnesium smelters, affected by inventory pressure, had no choice but to lower quotations, with a notable increase in low-priced supply and a slight downward shift in market quotations. Demand side remained weak with low bid prices; traders’ purchases were mainly for restocking to meet rigid demand, and market trading enthusiasm was insufficient. Markets outside China were also weak. Ocean freight rates stayed at high levels, and coupled with exchange-rate fluctuations, export order-taking enthusiasm was dampened. Firm orders still left room for negotiation, with no sign of a pickup in new orders. Most traders chose to stay on the sidelines at this stage, with weak willingness to replenish and engage in stockpiling. Judging from today’s transactions, primary magnesium smelters offered concessions to spur deals, while downstream buyers entered the market to restock at appropriate times. Overall transactions showed a pattern of lower prices and higher volumes, and market acceptance of the overall 15,850 price level was moderate. As such, the current magnesium ingot market was likely to consolidate on a weak note.

Anhui Magnesium Unveils Lightweight, Recyclable Magnesium Alloy Formwork at World of Concrete Asia Expo
[SMM Magnesium Express]Recently, Anhui Magnesium and Aluminum released a low-density magnesium alloy structural formwork at the World of Concrete Asia Expo. This product weighs only one-third of traditional steel formwork, and is approximately 30% lighter than aluminum alloy formwork of the same size. Furthermore, there is no need for secondary plastering on the wall surface after pouring. Leveraging the full industrial chain advantages of Baowu Magnesium Industry, this formwork can achieve a recycling and reuse rate of over 90%. As the demand for lightweight, green, and low-carbon construction continues to grow, magnesium alloy formwork is poised to become a new growth point in the construction formwork sector.

Magnesium Ingot Weekly Price Rose, Upstream Support Strong, Downstream Follow-up Insufficient, Upside Room Limited [SMM Magnesium Weekly Data]
[Weekly Magnesium Ingot Prices Rise on Strong Upstream Support; Insufficient Downstream Follow-Through Limits Upside Room] This week, mainstream quotations for magnesium ingot in major producing areas were 15,900-16,000 yuan/mt, up 100 yuan/mt WoW, with FOB prices at $2,250-2,350/mt. This round of magnesium ingot price gains was driven by three factors: supply-side maintenance-related production cuts, cost push from coal and ferrosilicon, and concentrated delivery and restocking by traders. However, after the price increase, downstream fear of high prices emerged and transactions returned to mediocre levels; foreign trade remained weak, constrained by exchange rate fluctuations and the uncertain recovery of summer break orders. Upstream dolomite prices were stable, with sufficient supply from multiple channels; downstream magnesium powder and magnesium alloy prices followed the increase, but demand follow-through was insufficient. Magnesium alloy processing fees remained under pressure due to ample inventory, the impact of non-standard supply sources, high-temperature maintenance at die-casting enterprises, plastic substitution in two-wheelers, and other factors. In the short term, cost support is pitted against weak demand, and magnesium prices continue to move sideways.

Magnesium Prices Rise Due to Supply Cuts, Cost Hikes; Demand Weakness Limits Further Gains
【SMM Weekly Magnesium Review】This week, the mainstream offer of magnesium ingots in major production regions stands at RMB 15,900-16,000/ton, up RMB 100/ton week on week, with FOB offer at USD 2,250-2,350/ton. This round of magnesium ingot rally is driven by three factors: supply-side maintenance-led production cuts, rising costs of coal and ferrosilicon, and concentrated order fulfillment and restocking by traders. However, after the price hike, downstream players have developed reluctance to chase high prices, leading to dull transactions; the foreign trade sector remains weak, constrained by exchange rate fluctuations and unclear recovery of orders amid the summer break. The price of upstream dolomite stays stable with sufficient supply from multiple channels; downstream magnesium powder and magnesium alloy follow the price hike but lack sufficient demand support. For magnesium alloy, processing fees remain under continuous pressure due to ample inventory, impact of non-standard supplies, high-temperature maintenance of die-casting enterprises, and plastic substitution in two-wheeled vehicles. In the short term, amid the game between cost support and sluggish demand, magnesium price will continue to fluctuate in a narrow range.
