[SMM Daily Review: Spot Lithium Carbonate Prices Rose in a Volatile Range on August 17]

SMM’s spot price for battery-grade lithium carbonate rose in a volatile range compared with the previous business day. The most-traded lithium carbonate contract rolled from 2609 to 2701. It opened higher at 155,600 yuan/mt. After the open, bulls quickly pushed prices up, with prices shooting up to 157,500 yuan/mt to set an intraday high, before facing selling pressure from bears and pulling back in choppy trading. In the morning session, prices fluctuated within 154,000–155,500 yuan/mt, with the center gradually moving lower. Around noon, bears stepped up their selling, accelerating the drop to 151,800 yuan/mt. In the afternoon, prices consolidated at lows; although there was a slight rebound, prices failed to break above the pressure from the average price line. Late in the session, prices moved sideways within 153,300–153,500 yuan/mt, and finally closed down 0.44% at 153,500 yuan/mt, with open interest increasing by 18,658 lots.

Spot market, downstream material plants purchased as needed on dips, but as prices continued to drift lower in choppy trading, wait-and-see sentiment remained strong. Large-scale restocking had yet to emerge, and overall activity was still dominated by just-in-time procurement. Supply side, upstream lithium chemical plants’ sentiment to hold prices firm persisted, and the offer levels used for some spot orders’ shipments were notably higher than actual market transaction levels; however, a small number of lithium chemical plants kept spot-order selling at a normal pace. Overall, both the activity of market inquiries and actual transactions recovered somewhat.

[Lithium Battery: Mitsubishi Motors Plans To Build Battery Plant In Philippines]
Recently, Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation disclosed that it is planning to construct a new, modern electric vehicle battery assembly facility. The total investment scale for the project reaches 7 billion Philippine pesos, all of which will be incorporated into the Philippines' new Electric Vehicle Incentive Strategy (EVIS) support framework. The chairman of Mitsubishi Motors Philippines clearly stated that this planned project focuses on the localized assembly of batteries for hybrid models, with no plans to include battery research and development at this stage. The primary bottleneck currently hindering project progress is the pending official release of the detailed implementing rules for the EVIS policy. At the technology and industry chain planning level, Mitsubishi aims to position this Philippines battery factory as a benchmark production line in Southeast Asia, with technical standards aligned with its existing production bases in Thailand and Indonesia, and overall competitiveness benchmarked against its domestic factories in Japan. At the same time, the company will progressively advance localization support and has already initiated cooperation discussions with several local Philippine automotive parts companies to build a local supply chain system.

[Solid-State Battery: Tianqi Lithium Expected to Post an H1 Net Profit of 2.85-4.25 billion yuan; Surging Lithium Chemicals Prices Drive a Sharp Earnings Jump] On July 14, 2026, Tianqi Lithium (002466) released its 2026 interim performance forecast. During the reporting period, the company expected attributable net profit of 2.85-4.25 billion yuan, up 3,276.35% to 4,934.91% YoY, driven by a significant increase in the average selling price of lithium products and higher investment income from SQM. In solid-state batteries, the 50 mt/year lithium sulfide pilot project has substantially moved into implementation and construction; meanwhile, the company can produce 300 mm-wide, roll-to-roll ultrathin lithium strip, which, after surface treatment, can be directly supplied to solid-state battery producers as an anode metal material.
