NioBay Secures $500,000 Grant to Advance Crevier Niobium and Tantalum Project

[SMM Flash] NioBay Metals has received a C$500,000 grant from the Government of Québec to advance processing work at its Crevier niobium and tantalum project in Québec, Canada. The funding will support the production of niobium and tantalum concentrates from 140 metric tonnes of material and optimisation of the project's hydrometallurgical processes for producing niobium and tantalum oxides.

The grant comes as Québec seeks to strengthen its position in critical and strategic minerals. NioBay says Crevier will focus on producing niobium oxide for battery and superalloy manufacturers, including defence-industry suppliers, alongside tantalum oxide for high-tech applications. The project is located approximately 50 km north of Girardville and within the Nitassinan ancestral territory of the Pekuakamiulnuatsh First Nation.

The funding could help advance the project's processing capabilities and provide further technical information on the production of Nb and Ta oxides. For the niobium and tantalum markets, development of additional North American processing capacity could support supply diversification beyond established producing regions. However, Crevier remains a development-stage project, meaning its eventual contribution to commercial supply will depend on further technical, economic and project-development milestones.

U.S. Critical Minerals Moves to Acquire Historic McAllister Tantalum Mine and Mill

[SMM Flash] U.S. Critical Minerals has entered binding agreements to merge with Nova Resources and acquire the historic McAllister tantalum mine, mineral rights and associated processing mill in Alabama, seeking to establish a domestic US tantalum supply source. The McAllister operation produced approximately 250 tonnes of tantalum concentrate between 1989 and 1992, about half of which was sold to the US National Defense Stockpile. Nova controls more than 5,000 acres across the Coosa County district, where exploration has outlined a lithium-caesium-tantalum pegmatite system extending over more than 230 km² and initial drilling has confirmed tantalum and lithium mineralisation. Following completion of the transactions, U.S. Critical Minerals plans geophysical surveys, drilling and assessment of the existing mill. Any restart remains conditional on exploration results, technical studies, permitting, financing and market conditions, meaning no future production volume has yet been confirmed.

DRC Expands State Control Over Geological Data as Critical-Minerals Mapping Accelerates

[SMM Flash] The Democratic Republic of Congo is strengthening state control over geological information as it develops a national databank covering critical minerals including tantalum, cobalt, copper, lithium and gold. The country’s geological survey told Reuters that systematic exploration currently covers only about 20% of the DRC, while a US$180 million airborne mapping programme with Spain’s Xcalibur is surveying more than 700,000 km². The national geological databank is expected to become fully operational by the end of 2026. Basic geological information is expected to remain freely accessible, while more sensitive datasets will be subject to controlled, fee-based access. The initiative does not change current coltan production directly, but improved geological intelligence could influence where future tantalum exploration capital is deployed and strengthen Kinshasa’s negotiating position over new discoveries. The impact on actual supply will depend on whether mapped targets proceed through exploration, financing and mine development.
