SMM, August 13: Rare earth prices diverged today. Specifically, in the oxide market, Pr-Nd oxide prices fell by 8,000 yuan/mt; dysprosium oxide prices were flat; terbium oxide prices were flat; gadolinium oxide prices fell by 500 yuan/mt; holmium oxide prices were flat; and erbium oxide prices were flat.
In the metal market, Pr-Nd alloy prices fell by 7,500 yuan/mt; dysprosium-iron alloy prices fell by 5,000 yuan/mt; terbium metal prices were flat; gadolinium-iron alloy prices were flat; holmium-iron market prices were flat; and lanthanum-cerium metal (alloy grade) prices were flat.
In markets outside China, praseodymium oxide FOB prices held steady this week; neodymium oxide FOB prices fell by $10/kg this week; terbium oxide FOB prices fell by $8/kg this week; dysprosium oxide FOB prices were flat this week; Pr-Nd oxide (FOB China) prices fell by $3/kg this week; praseodymium metal FOB prices fell by $4/kg this week; neodymium metal FOB prices fell by $4/kg this week; terbium metal FOB prices fell by $8/kg this week; and Pr-Nd alloy (FOB China) prices were flat this week.
At present, rare earth prices are diverging: Pr-Nd prices remain in the doldrums, while medium-heavy rare earth prices are relatively stable.
Focusing on the Pr-Nd market, due to the continued pullback in Pr-Nd oxide futures prices, some spot traders lowered their offers, dragging Pr-Nd oxide prices slightly lower; however, producers showed limited willingness to sell at low prices, and actual transactions were relatively stagnant. In the metal market, due to continued weakness in raw material prices, although some suppliers lowered their offers, metal producers showed little willingness to actively quote; the overall market was dominated by strong wait-and-see sentiment, and actual trading was lackluster.
In the medium-heavy rare earth market, although inquiry activity remained sluggish, suppliers left offers largely unchanged, and overall prices were stable. Among these, for gadolinium products, suppliers lowered their offers slightly due to the continued pullback in Pr-Nd prices.
Overall, downstream inquiries and buying interest remained low, market inquiry activity was still sparse, and overall trading activity was sluggish. Rare earth prices continued to show divergent trends: in the Pr-Nd market, some suppliers lowered their offers slightly due to the continued pullback in futures prices, while medium-heavy rare earth prices were relatively firm and generally stable. In the near term, due to the stalemate in market trading, Pr-Nd product prices are likely to move sideways in a narrow range.
