[SMM Stainless Steel Flash] India's JSL Plans USD4.2B Greenfield Stainless Mill, Global Capacity to Hit 8.2Mt/y

Published: Aug 13, 2026 10:11
According to SMM, India's largest stainless steel producer Jindal Stainless (JSL) has initiated land identification in Maharashtra for a greenfield facility with a planned investment of approximately Rs 40,000 crore (USD4.2 billion) and annual capacity of 4 million tonnes, to be developed in phases with the first phase targeted within four years. The Maharashtra government has pledged to expedite regulatory approvals and extend fiscal incentives. Once operational, JSL's domestic melting capacity will expand from 3 million ton/year to 7 million ton/year; combined with its 49%-owned Indonesian JV PT Glory Metal Indonesia, which commenced operations in March at 1.2 million ton/year, global stainless melting capacity will reach 8.2 million ton/year. JSL is also advancing downstream cold-rolling expansions at Jajpur, Hisar, and Kharagpur, with capacity projected to grow from 2.05 million ton/year to 2.67 million ton/year over the next two years. The new mill will focus on specialized grades for high-end emerging sectors including hydrogen, nuclear, defense, mobility, infrastructure, and process industries.

[SMM Flash] NBS Releases June Sulfuric Acid Production
According to the National Bureau of Statistics, national sulfuric acid (100% basis) output in June 2026 reached approximately 7.923 million tons (vs. 8.365 million in May, 8.948 million in April, and 9.637 million in March, showing a month‑on‑month decline). The year‑on‑year change for the month was about ‑10%. For the first half of the year (January–June), cumulative production totaled roughly 52.223 million tons, a year‑on‑year decrease of about ‑0.1% (down from +1.9% in the January–May period, mainly due to the sharp 10% drop in June). Production remains heavily concentrated in smelting and phosphate‑fertilizer provinces such as Yunnan, Inner Mongolia, Guangxi, Anhui, Henan, and Shandong—with Yunnan ranking first at about 1.24 million tons per month. Smelter acid (by‑product from copper/zinc processing) forms the supply backbone, while acid for phosphate fertilizer drives the bulk of demand.
