【Drone Attacks Disrupt Black Sea Coal Shipments, Threatening Russian and Kazakh Export Supply】

Published: Aug 11, 2026 14:05

Drone attacks, war-risk insurance withdrawals and terminal suspensions reportedly brought Russian and Kazakh coal exports through the Azov–Black Sea basin to a near standstill in August. Taman Port has largely suspended coal transshipment, while handling rates at some southern ports have fallen to 19%.

Russian coal deliveries to Türkiye declined by 22.9% year on year to 12.1 million tonnes in the first half of 2026, with reduced supply already pushing up imported coal prices. If the disruption persists, the global market could lose 10–12 million tonnes of supply in the second half of 2026, supporting short-term seaborne coal prices in the Black Sea and Türkiye. The actual impact will depend on transport recovery and replacement supply.

[SMM Steel] Steel Prices Steady as Exchange Rates Hold; Malaysia Reviews AD Duties on Coated Steel from Vietnam, China
[Vietnam] Vietnam’s domestic steel market remained relatively stable, with construction steel prices holding at around 533 USD/tonne as exchange rates and market conditions were largely unchanged. HRC prices stood at around 515–522 USD/tonne CFR Ho Chi Minh City following Formosa Hà Tĩnh’s latest price announcement, while subdued demand continued to weigh on the market. Meanwhile, Malaysia’s Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) initiated an expiry review of anti-dumping duties on pre-painted steel coils from China and Vietnam, with a final determination expected within 180 days. The review could affect regional coated steel trade flows and supplier competitiveness.

HRC Imports to Indonesia Expected to Decline in H2 2026
Indonesia's HRC market faces a double hit in the second half of 2026: already-sluggish demand, plus falling imports as anti-dumping duties—particularly on Chinese HRC—bite. Buyers say the duties will push imported HRC prices higher, even though the pre-duty price of (example of USD 485 USD/ton FOB for China product) was already below domestic HRC at 500 USD/ton FOB. As a result, domestic HRC is expected to absorb more of the existing demand, though imports will still be needed to cover HRC grades with specific specifications that local mills can't supply.

Nippon Steel Completes Hot-Rolling Mill in Nagoya
Nippon Steel has inaugurated a new hot rolling mill at its Nagoya Steel Works, with an annual capacity of approximately 6 million metric tons. The facility, which was officially completed during a ceremony on August 6, represents an investment of approximately 300 billion yen (about 1.9 billion U.S. dollars). This line is designed to boost production of high-quality thin-gauge steel, particularly ultra-high-strength automotive steel (tensile strength ≥1.0 GPa), and is equipped with rolling machinery that the company claims has the world’s highest load capacity. The existing hot rolling line at the site will be shut down during fiscal year 2026. Nippon Steel cited rising demand for lighter and stronger automotive steel—driven by stricter emissions and crash safety standards as well as the growth of electric vehicles (EVs)—as the reason behind this expansion.
