SAIL has commissioned its first 0.18 MTPA Micro Pellet Plant at Rourkela Steel Plant, enabling the recycling of iron- and steelmaking waste into micro pellets for reuse in blast furnaces, improving resource efficiency and supporting more sustainable steel production.

Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) has commissioned its first Micro Pellet Plant at its Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), marking a step forward in the company's resource efficiency and decarbonisation initiatives. The new facility has an annual capacity of 180,000 tonnes and converts iron- and steelmaking process waste into value-added micro pellets for reuse in ironmaking, reducing landfill disposal while improving raw material utilisation.

The project forms part of RSP's broader modernisation and environmental upgrade programme, which includes technological measures aimed at increasing production efficiency and lowering waste generation. By recycling process residues back into the production cycle, the plant is expected to reduce dependence on fresh raw materials, improve metal recovery and support SAIL's long-term sustainability and circular economy objectives.
