[SMM Magnesium Survey: Japan's Tokuyama NEDO Magnesium Hydride Project Adopted, Hokkaido Green Hydrogen and Magnesium Supply Chain Launched] The NEDO magnesium hydride supply chain survey project, in which Japan's Tokuyama participates, was officially announced to have been adopted. Wakkanai City will serve as the manufacturing base, and Sapporo City as the hydrogen demand site. The project will carry out surveys on magnesium, SOEC hydrogen production, and magnesium hydride manufacturing, and plans the local recycling of magnesium hydroxide, aiming to build an integrated supply chain of green hydrogen and domestically produced magnesium in Hokkaido. The project implementation period is FY2026.

The project "Investigation into the Construction of an Integrated Supply Chain of Renewable Energy Hydrogen and Domestically Produced Magnesium in Hokkaido Using Magnesium Hydride," in which Tokuyama, Japan participates, has been officially adopted by NEDO (New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization) under its public solicitation for the "Technology Development and Demonstration Project for the Sophistication of Hydrogen Society Model Construction," and has been publicly announced. The project is represented by H2 Hokkaido Co., Ltd. as the primary proposer, with Tokuyama as one of the co-proposers.

The project aims to leverage Hokkaido's abundant renewable energy potential to achieve the social implementation of an integrated supply chain of domestically produced green hydrogen and domestically produced green magnesium, while establishing an urban hydrogen utilization model in Sapporo City, with targets including improving the self-sufficiency rate of energy and magnesium, creating hydrogen demand, and fostering new regional industries. In terms of specific layout, with Wakkanai City as the manufacturing base and Sapporo City as the main hydrogen demand location, investigations will be conducted on the production of magnesium (Mg), hydrogen (H2) via SOEC water electrolysis, and magnesium hydride (MgH2) powered by renewable energy electricity. Furthermore, the project will also explore intra-Hokkaido transportation, hydrogen utilization at demand sites, and the construction of a circular ecosystem featuring local production and local consumption of magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2) residue left after hydrogen release from magnesium hydride.

Tokuyama previously joined the "Sapporo City Hydrogen and Renewable Energy Promotion Council" in June 2025, and in March 2026, H2 Hokkaido and Sapporo City signed the "Cooperation Agreement for the Promotion of Hydrogen Energy Utilization." This NEDO adoption will further promote the popularization of magnesium hydride and the construction of a hydrogen supply chain. Co-proposers of the project also include Sapporo City, Chiyoda Corporation, TISI, Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance Co., Ltd., Docon, and Mizuho Bank, while Hokkaido University serves as a joint research institution. The project period is fiscal year 2026.

Magnesium Ingot in the Doldrums, Demand Suppresses Rebound Space [SMM Magnesium Weekly Data]
[Magnesium Ingot in the Doldrums, Demand Caps Rebound Room] This week, mainstream quotations for magnesium ingot in major producing areas were 15,800-15,900 yuan/mt, up 100 yuan/mt WoW, while FOB prices in the overseas market weakened in tandem. The Chinese market consolidated at lows overall, with smelting costs providing bottom support and leaving limited further downside room. However, producers’ hold-back-from-selling sentiment showed signs of easing, and low-priced supplies emerged. Downstream users and traders had insufficient orders and remained cautious in procurement, leaving overall trading sluggish. On the export front, the overseas summer break has not yet ended, with limited inquiries from the overseas market and evident push for lower prices from buyers outside China. Upstream, dolomite supply channels were switched, keeping raw material supply ample and prices stable. Downstream magnesium powder and magnesium alloy followed the magnesium ingot in the doldrums, with the magnesium alloy market showing supply-demand weakness and processing fees under pressure. In the short term, magnesium ingot lacks upward drivers and is expected to continue the pattern of moving sideways.

Chenzhi Light Quantization and Changan Auto Launch Magnesium Alloy Industrialization for EVs
[SMM Magnesium Express]Chenzhi Light Quantization partnered with Changan Automobile to establish a joint project team, launching an industrialization project for magnesium alloy in new energy vehicles. Together, they aim to build a smart manufacturing base for magnesium alloy components, integrating R&D, trial production, manufacturing, and validation. The project focuses on magnesium alloy electric drive housings while advancing the large-scale production of body structural parts such as rear floors and back door inner panels, creating a closed-loop supply chain from R&D to mass production. With deep collaboration between leading automakers and lightweight material suppliers, the widespread application of magnesium alloy in core components for new energy vehicles is expected to accelerate further.

Magnesium Inventory Down 4.0% WoW, Prices Fall Amid Low Demand and Supply Constraints
[SMM Magnesium Weekly Inventory Flash] This week social inventory decreased by 4.0% WoW, showing a continued destocking trend. Magnesium ingot prices drifted lower this week, with no significant recovery in downstream new orders and ex-China demand. Traders' willingness to purchase and stockpile was low, and the overall market lacked growth momentum from new orders. However, there were still small amounts of spot orders for rigid demand from downstream and traders. Amid sluggish market trading, this demand did not translate into new purchases but was mainly fulfilled through destocking existing inventories. Meanwhile, on the supply side, impacted by ongoing maintenance and losses, the inflow of new spot magnesium into the market was limited, further driving the gradual destocking of social inventory.
