[SMM Analysis] APL Apollo sees HRC prices rebound amid lower supply, expects demand recovery in H2 FY27

Published: Aug 6, 2026 09:45
Higher HRC prices helped offset weaker volumes for APL Apollo Tubes in the April–June quarter, highlighting a market driven by margin expansion rather than demand growth. The company said tighter domestic flat-steel availability supported prices despite monsoon-led weakness and expects HRC consumption to strengthen in the second half of FY27 as infrastructure spending and construction activity recover.

Indian hot-rolled coil prices remained significantly higher on a quarter-on-quarter basis during April–June, although spot values softened from their April highs as elevated prices, seasonal weakness and expectations of a correction prompted buyers and distributors to limit purchases. APL Apollo Tubes said the preceding rise in steel prices supported product pricing and helped increase its gross profit per tonne, despite subdued construction demand and destocking by channel partners.

The company expects its performance to improve in the second half of FY27 as broader macroeconomic conditions turn more supportive and infrastructure-linked demand normalises. Domestic flat-steel availability was also reported to be relatively constrained in parts of the market because of production adjustments and maintenance at some mills, helping limit the extent of the price correction despite weak buying.

Reflecting the softer demand environment, APL Apollo's production declined to 746,000 mt in the April-June quarter from 797,000 mt a year earlier, while sales volumes fell 6% year on year to 744,823 mt from 794,350 mt. Despite the lower throughput, higher steel prices and an improved product mix lifted consolidated revenue 8.5% year on year to INR56.07 billion (US$590 million), while EBITDA increased 10.6% to INR4.11 billion (US$43 million). EBITDA per tonne improved to INR5,522/mt (US$58.1/mt), indicating that stronger realisations more than offset the decline in dispatches.

As one of India's largest structural steel tube producers and a major consumer of HRC, APL Apollo's results provide an important indicator of downstream flat steel demand. The combination of lower production and sales alongside higher profitability suggests that the domestic HRC market during the quarter was characterised by price-led margin expansion rather than volume-led growth. Looking ahead, the company said it expects steel demand to improve in the second half of FY27, supported by government infrastructure spending, an anticipated recovery in construction activity after the monsoon and continued growth in the structural steel tube segment. It also reiterated its long-term positive outlook for HRC consumption, citing India's expanding steel demand and increasing adoption of value-added structural steel products.

US mineral royalty company Natural Resource Partners L.P. (NRP) reported second-quarter 2026 net income of US$25.176 million, operating cash flow of US$40.950 million and free cash flow of US$41.723 million. The company also declared a cash distribution of US$0.75 per common unit. Revenue from NRP’s mineral rights business increased by US$6.1 million year on year, mainly driven by higher metallurgical and thermal coal sales volumes, as well as stronger coal prices at certain properties. Metallurgical coal accounted for approximately 70% of coal royalty revenue and around 45% of royalty coal sales volumes. However, the company said low natural gas prices, high coal inventories at power plants and weak global steel demand continued to weigh on its coal business.

【Glencore Expects Higher Steelmaking Coal Output in H2 2026】
Glencore reported adjusted EBITDA of US$10.1 billion for the first half of 2026, up 86% year on year and above market expectations of US$9.5 billion. The increase was mainly driven by heightened energy-market volatility resulting from the conflict in the Middle East, which boosted earnings from the company’s commodity marketing and trading business. Adjusted EBIT from its marketing division reached US$3.3 billion, already approaching the upper end of its full-year target range. Adjusted EBITDA from its industrial operations, including mining assets, increased 72% year on year to US$6.5 billion, primarily supported by higher commodity prices. Glencore said it would continue expanding its copper business while retaining coal as a core part of its portfolio. The company expects production growth in the second half of 2026 to be driven mainly by higher steelmaking coal output. Based on prevailing commodity prices and its production outlook for the second half, Glencore expects full-year 2026 adjusted EBITDA of approximately US$19.7 billion.

US metallurgical coal producer Warrior Met Coal reported second-quarter 2026 metallurgical coal sales of 3.654 million short tons, up 65% year on year, while production increased 45% to 3.347 million short tons, mainly driven by the continued ramp-up of the Blue Creek mine. The average net selling price rose 6% year on year to US$137.82 per short ton, while FOB port cash cost of sales declined 9% to US$92.53 per short ton. As a result, adjusted EBITDA surged 193% to US$156.9 million, while net income increased to US$87.4 million.
