Platinum Prices Hold Up Well, Downstream Restocking Sufficient, Spot Market Supply and Demand Both Weak [SMM Daily Commentary]

Published: Jul 31, 2026 13:48
Platinum drifted higher today. Data-wise, the US June PCE price index showed some positive changes, declining 0.1% MoM, the first negative reading in six years, indicating some easing of inflationary pressures at the data level. In the morning session, the most-traded GFEX platinum contract PT2610 closed at 400.55 yuan/g, up 1.20%. The inverted price spread between the SGE platinum 9995 best ask price and GFEX PT2610 narrowed to around 5 yuan/g. Spot market, mainstream quotations for spot platinum were at discounts of 2.5 yuan/g to 1.5 yuan/g against the PT2610 contract. As delivery approached and the spread opportunity between futures contracts was favorable, suppliers had limited willingness to sell and their quotes held up well. Some traders inquired about platinum warrants following the spread opportunity. Downstream enterprises had restocked sufficiently yesterday afternoon when futures prices fell sharply, so their procurement demand was low today. Overall, the spot platinum market saw weak supply and demand today.

Implats Suspends Rustenburg Platinum Mine After Fatalities Trigger Safety Review
Impala Platinum Holdings (Implats) has temporarily suspended mining activities at its flagship Rustenburg complex in South Africa following six worker fatalities over the past year and a rise in serious underground safety incidents. The company initiated a comprehensive safety reset from 24–28 July to strengthen operational controls and prevent further incidents. Rustenburg is one of the world’s largest platinum-group metals (PGM) mining complexes and Implats’ largest operation, employing approximately 51,500 workers. The mine accounts for nearly half of Implats’ total PGM production and is expected to produce around 1.67–1.76 million six-element PGM ounces in the 2026 financial year. The temporary shutdown is expected to impact approximately eight days of production, with the company stating that the final effect on output will be assessed after operations resume. Existing stockpiles are expected to help mitigate any short-term supply impact. The short-term impact on global platinum supply is expected to remain limited due to the brief duration of the shutdown and available inventories. However, renewed safety concerns at major South African operations may provide additional support to platinum prices, highlighting potential supply-side risks facing the world’s leading region for PGM production.

Ruthenium-Iridium Titanium Anode Market Expected to More Than Double by 2034
[SMM Express] The global ruthenium-iridium titanium anode market is projected to grow from USD 1.2 billion in 2025 to USD 2.5 billion by 2034, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.3% over 2026-2034, according to a recent industry market report. Demand is expected to be supported by expanding applications in chlor-alkali production, electrolysis, electroplating, wastewater treatment, fuel cells and battery technologies, as industries seek more durable and energy-efficient electrode materials. Ruthenium-iridium titanium anodes are valued for their corrosion resistance, electrochemical stability and long operating life in aggressive industrial environments. Green hydrogen production is credited to be one of the strongest long-term growth drivers, alongside stricter environmental regulations encouraging advanced water treatment and cleaner chemical manufacturing. Growth in the electronics, semiconductor and energy sectors is also expected to support demand. However, the market continues to face challenges from the high cost and limited availability of ruthenium and iridium, with supply concentrated in a small number of producing countries.
