JOGMEC Invests $33.9M in Toyota Tsusho's Namibian Rare Earth Project, Enhancing Supply Security

[SMM Rare Earth Flash News] Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) and Toyota Tsusho have announced that JOGMEC will invest up to C$47.7 million (approximately $33.9 million) in Toyota Tsusho’s Namibian rare earth project company to jointly develop the Lofdal heavy rare earth mine in Namibia. This is expected to become Japan’s first rare earth mine project in Africa, enhancing the supply security of critical minerals. The Lofdal deposit is rich in heavy rare earth elements such as dysprosium and terbium, which can be used in permanent magnetic materials for NEV motors, among other applications. The two parties will conduct a feasibility study through a newly established project company and plan to make a final investment decision in fiscal year 2027.

[SMM Rare Earth Daily Review: Rare Earth Prices Diverge, Pr-Nd in the Doldrums, Dysprosium and Holmium Rise] Overall, inquiry activity in the rare earth market remains subdued, and price performance is divergent: the Pr-Nd market sees sluggish trading and prices in the doldrums; for dysprosium products, due to procurement by large manufacturers, low-priced supply is tightening, and suppliers are raising their offers. It is expected that in the short term, affected by persistently sluggish trading, Pr-Nd product prices will likely continue to move sideways in a narrow range.

[Pr-Nd Oxide Quotes Temporarily Stable, Trading Sluggish; Dysprosium Oxide Active and Rising, Low-Priced Supplies Tightened; Magnetic Material Orders Average] Yesterday, Pr-Nd oxide market quotes were temporarily stable, with few sellers offering low-priced shipments, metal plants' purchase willingness remaining low, and market trading sluggish. In the medium-heavy rare earth sector, inquiries and purchases for dysprosium oxide were relatively active, prices showed an upward trend, and low-priced supplies tightened rapidly, while the terbium oxide market remained stable.
