[National Energy Administration: Total electricity consumption up 5.3% YoY, January-June]

The National Energy Administration released data on total electricity consumption for June and other statistics. In June, total electricity consumption reached 898.1 billion kWh, up 3.7% YoY. By industry, electricity use in the primary industry was 13.6 billion kWh, up 2.0% YoY. For the secondary industry, consumption reached 573.4 billion kWh, up 4.7% YoY; within this, industrial electricity consumption was 568.3 billion kWh, up 4.9% YoY, and consumption by high-tech and equipment manufacturing was 112.1 billion kWh, up 10.3% YoY. Electricity consumption in the tertiary industry stood at 186 billion kWh, up 5.6% YoY; among this, electricity used by charging and battery swapping services and Internet data services was 14.8 billion and 9.1 billion kWh, with growth rates of 57.1% and 41.4%, respectively. Electricity consumed by urban and rural residents was 125.1 billion kWh, down 3.1% YoY. From January to June, cumulative total electricity consumption reached 5,099.9 billion kWh, up 5.3% YoY.

[IEA: Global Electricity Demand to Maintain Rapid Growth This Year and Next]

The International Energy Agency (IEA) said in a report on July 23 that despite recent Middle East conflicts disrupting global natural gas markets and driving up power generation costs in many regions, global electricity demand is still expected to maintain rapid growth this year and next, as electricity demand continues to increase in sectors such as industry, household appliances, cooling, EVs, and data centers. The report projects that global electricity demand will grow by 3.6% in 2026 and 3.8% in 2027, both higher than the 2025 growth (3%). By 2027, global electricity consumption is projected to rise to 30,700 TWh. The report expects renewable energy to surpass coal in 2026 to become the world's largest electricity source. In 2026, solar PV power generation is projected to increase by approximately 600 TWh, and PV power generation is expected to surpass wind power, becoming the second largest renewable energy source globally after hydropower.
