Trump Signs Tariff Incentive to Boost US Aluminum Production and Attract Investments

Published: Jul 21, 2026 09:07
[SMM Aluminum Express News] U.S. President Donald Trump signed a proclamation introducing a new Section 232 tariff incentive aimed at encouraging companies to onshore aluminum production and manufacturing in the United States. Companies that submit and execute approved domestic investment plans may qualify for a reduced tariff rate equal to half of the applicable Section 232 duty, while firms that fail to meet their commitments could face repayment of the forgone duties with interest. The program is designed to boost domestic primary aluminum capacity, strengthen supply chain resilience and attract investment in U.S. aluminum production and downstream manufacturing. The Commerce Department will oversee company investment plans and determine eligibility for the reduced tariff treatment.
