Canada and Japan Discuss Critical Mineral Cooperation, Including Joint Mining Projects and Stockpiling

Published: Jul 1, 2026 17:00
Canadian International Trade Minister Sidhu Maninder revealed in an interview that Ottawa and Tokyo are negotiating cooperation options, including joint mining projects, offtake agreements, and joint stockpiling for minerals such as graphite and gallium. "We are providing Japan with opportunities to develop Canada's critical minerals." He cited the graphite offtake agreement between Nouveau Monde Graphite and Panasonic as an example to illustrate this point, noting that graphite is a critical material for batteries. Sidhu is leading a large delegation to Tokyo, which includes nearly 300 representatives from 180 enterprises and organizations, marking the largest such mission by this North American country in the Asia-Pacific region. Japan and Western governments and manufacturers have been seeking secure supplies of rare earth minerals.

Pr-Nd Alloy Prices Drop 0.8% Weekly, Struggle with Low Demand and Raw Material Supply Tightness【SMM Analysis】
Pr-Nd alloy prices fell 0.8% WoW to 917,500 yuan/mt as weaker raw material prices and sluggish downstream demand weighed on the market. Despite a late-week rebound in raw materials, buying interest remained weak. Producers posted their first loss of the year, with margins falling to -1,076 yuan/mt due to tight Pr-Nd oxide supply and oversupplied alloy. Near-term prices are expected to remain rangebound amid firm costs but weak demand and cautious restocking.

AI Emerges as New Driver of Rare Earth Demand, Boosting Supply Chain Restructuring Efforts
Sprott Asset Management’s research suggests that Western countries are investing billions of dollars to restructure supply chains to meet rare earth demand from national defense and clean energy, but artificial intelligence (AI) is unexpectedly becoming a new driver of rare earth demand growth. The Toronto-based investment management firm said AI has now joined national defense and electrification as the third driver of rare earth demand growth, with the world’s top five hyperscale data center operators alone having pledged to invest $400 billion in 2025.
