【SMM Steel】Hyundai Steel signed a master research agreement with LSU on June 16, 2026 to support technology development and workforce training for its $5.8bn EAF-based steel mill in Ascension Parish. The 1,800-acre facility, slated for 2029 completion, will create 1,300 direct jobs and supply automotive steel to Hyundai Motor Group's US plants. The partnership covers joint research in metallurgy, materials science, energy, robotics, automation, and environmental engineering, with pre-agreed terms on IP, project management, and data protection. The mill will be one of North America's first fully integrated EAF plants using scrap and DRI. LSU will contribute research infrastructure including the Louisiana Light Source synchrotron, Advanced Microscopy Core, and Energy Institute. Hyundai Steel has previously partnered with River Parishes Community College and LED FastStart for technician training; the LSU deal extends collaboration to graduate-level research.
