【SMM Steel】AISI reports higher May steel import permit applications

【SMM Steel】AISI reported that US steel import permit applications reached 1.996 million net tons in May up 0.7% from April and 6.5% above April's preliminary imports. Finished steel permits were 1.495 million net tons up 8.5% from April. For Jan-May 2026 total and finished steel imports were both down over 27% from the same 2025 period. AISI estimated finished steel import market share at 17% in May and 16% year-to-date. The largest permit sources for May were South Korea Canada Brazil Vietnam and Japan.
