[SMM Iron & Steel] India's NMDC Iron Ore Output Surges 20% in May 2026 While Sales Decline

Published: Jun 4, 2026 14:43
Indian state-run miner NMDC Limited reported a 19.9% year-on-year increase in iron ore production to 5.51 million metric tons (mt) in May 2026, while its monthly sales fell by 6.9% to 4.04 million mt. Cumulatively, for the April-May period of the current fiscal year, the company's total iron ore output amounted to 9.96 million mt, representing a 9.96% decline compared to the same period last year. The significant divergence between surging monthly production and contracting sales indicates a potential inventory buildup at the mines. This mismatch suggests that domestic downstream demand may be struggling to absorb the recent increase in supply, which could exert downward pressure on regional iron ore prices in the near term.
