[SMM Aluminum Flash News] Glencore Expands US Aluminum Recycling Capacity to 120,000 Tonnes

Published: Apr 14, 2026 07:30
Glencore has acquired a 45% stake in an aluminum recycling and remelting plant in South Carolina, further expanding its presence in the US market. The facility is operated by Alumicore, which retains the remaining 55% stake. Amid Middle East disruptions to global supply chains and rising aluminum prices, companies are accelerating investment in recycled aluminum to secure supply. Glencore stated that the move will strengthen the resilience and sustainability of the US domestic aluminum supply chain. Once all three facilities are operational, total recycling capacity is expected to exceed 120,000 tonnes per year, reflecting a broader shift toward recycled aluminum to reduce reliance on primary metal and mitigate supply risks.

SHFE and LME Aluminum Indicators Turned Comprehensively Stronger, Geopolitical Risks Dominated Short-Term Market [SMM Aluminum Morning Meeting Minutes]
[SHFE and LME Aluminum Indicators Strengthen Across the Board, Geopolitical Risks Dominate Short-Term Market] Overall, from a macro perspective, risks of strait transit restrictions and conflict escalation resonated with fundamental supply-side hard damage and low global inventory, jointly providing strong bottom support for aluminum prices. However, weak interest rate cut expectations, China's aluminum ingot inventory buildup exceeding expectations, and adverse expectations on consumption and inflation from recent high fluctuations in oil prices all notably dragged on the upside room for aluminum prices. In the short term, aluminum prices fluctuated at highs.
