UK Approves Largest Solar Farm to Date to Support Energy Transition

Published: Apr 9, 2026 17:36
The UK government has granted planning approval for the 800 MW Springwell Solar Farm, developed by Luminous Energy and EDF Power Solutions. Scheduled to connect to the grid in 2029, it will become the UK’s largest solar installation to date. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband issued the Development Consent Order (DCO) on April 8, 2026, overriding local concerns regarding agricultural land impact, while a GBP 2 million community funding package was welcomed. Simultaneously, Statkraft is progressing with its 500 MW Mylen Leah Solar Farm proposal. The approval of such large-scale projects marks a significant milestone in the UK’s mission to accelerate decarbonization and secure homegrown clean energy.

[SMM PV] China's PV Continues "Anti-Involution"
Huachuang Securities noted that ex-China space PV catalysts continued to emerge, while China's PV sector continued its "anti-involution" efforts. SpaceX plans to procure approximately 1 trillion won worth of PV polysilicon from a subsidiary of South Korea's OCI within 3-5 years. In China, polysilicon price declines narrowed. AIKO initiated the conversion of 11 GW BC cell capacity. It is expected that China's main PV industry chain will undergo capacity rationalization based on the technological capabilities of each segment, with the upstream polysilicon segment emphasizing energy consumption control and the downstream cell and module segment emphasizing conversion efficiency.

[Solar PV: Colombia Announces Long-Term Clean Energy Auction to Boost Grid Resilience]
Colombia’s Ministry of Mines and Energy has announced a new clean energy auction under Resolution 40208 to secure 15-year supply contracts starting in 2030. The scheme supports solar, wind, battery storage, and hybrid projects through four distinct product categories, including peak-hour supply to incentivize energy storage. By mitigating price volatility and addressing climate-related risks like 'El Niño', the initiative aims to strengthen the national power system and accelerate the integration of renewable energy. The auction process is scheduled for completion by July 31, 2026.
