[SMM PV News] Ember: Solar and Storage Could Meet 90% of India's Power Demand

Published: Apr 9, 2026 09:36
New modeling by Ember reveals that solar paired with battery storage could supply 90% of India's electricity demand at an 'LCOE' of 'INR' 5.06/kWh. Achieving this requires roughly 930 GW of solar capacity and 2,560 GWh of battery storage, utilizing less than a third of the country's ground-mounted solar potential. While a 100% solar system is technically feasible, costs would rise disproportionately, making a 90% target more economically viable when combined with existing wind, hydro, and nuclear. The study notes that solar-plus-storage is already cost-competitive in major Indian states, though maintaining supply during the extended low-sunlight monsoon season remains a primary challenge.

[SMM PV News] South Australia Seeks Global Bids for Massive Renewable Zones
The South Australia government is inviting global investors to propose large-scale solar, wind, and storage projects across roughly 11,700 square kilometers of land in the Whyalla West and Gawler Ranges East areas. Released under the state's Hydrogen and Renewable Energy Act, these zones offer exceptional wind and solar resources with the potential to power over 500,000 homes. Tenders are open until June 28, 2026, requiring applicants to detail environmental management plans and community benefits. This initiative supports the state's target to reach 100% net renewable energy by 2027.

[SMM PV News] Croatia's 'HEP' Tenders 56 MW Solar and 200 MWh 'BESS' Project
Croatia's state-owned electricity company, 'HEP', is inviting bids for a 56 MW solar project paired with up to 200 MWh of battery energy storage in Zadar county. Supported by the 'EBRD', the project scope involves site preparation, electrical infrastructure installation, and the construction of a new 100/33 kV substation. Pre-qualification proposals are due by May 12, with the 54.8-hectare project slated to reach the ready-to-build stage by late 2026. This major tender aligns with Croatia's rapid renewable growth, as the country's cumulative solar capacity surpassed 1.2 GW in late 2025.
