[Magnesium Alloys Lead New Quality Productive Forces, Hydrogen Storage Goes Global + Vehicle Weight Reduction Reaches New Peaks] China’s magnesium alloy sector achieved two major breakthroughs, demonstrating the strong capabilities of indigenous innovation. On the one hand, a large-scale magnesium-based solid-state hydrogen storage device equipped with proprietary technology was successfully loaded at Shanghai Waigaoqiao Port and shipped to Malaysia, addressing longstanding pain points in traditional hydrogen storage and transportation and filling a gap in international maritime transport technology. On the other hand, the semi-solid injection-molded magnesium alloy seat frame assembly of FAW Hongqi was successfully installed, marking a key upgrade in vehicle lightweighting, with significant weight reduction achieved for each assembly. Spanning the two core fields of hydrogen storage and transportation and vehicle lightweighting, these achievements accelerated the scaled-up application of the magnesium alloy industry.

China’s magnesium alloy sector achieved two major breakthroughs, highlighting the strength of indigenous innovation. On one hand, a large-scale magnesium-based solid-state hydrogen storage device equipped with proprietary technology was successfully loaded at Shanghai Waigaoqiao Port and shipped to Malaysia, addressing long-standing pain points in conventional hydrogen storage and transportation and filling a gap in international maritime transport technology. On the other hand, the semi-solid injection-moulded magnesium alloy seat frame assembly of the Hongqi brand under FAW Group was successfully assembled, delivering a key upgrade in vehicle lightweighting with a significant weight reduction per assembly. Spanning the two core fields of hydrogen storage and transportation and automotive lightweighting, these achievements will accelerate the large-scale application of magnesium alloys.

On March 11, 2026, China’s first large-scale magnesium-based solid-state hydrogen storage device in a hydrogen-charged state was loaded at Shanghai Waigaoqiao Port for shipment to Malaysia, marking the world’s first commercial maritime export of large-scale magnesium-based solid-state hydrogen storage equipment. The device adopted magnesium-based hydrogen storage materials and control technology with proprietary intellectual property rights, enabling safe and efficient hydrogen storage and transport at ambient temperature and pressure. A single tank stored 1 mt of hydrogen and had a cycle life of over 3,000 cycles, effectively overcoming the bottlenecks of high costs and stringent safety requirements associated with traditional high-pressure/cryogenic hydrogen storage. With full-process assessment by maritime authorities and support from a green channel, this shipment filled a gap in international maritime transport technology and opened a logistics route for hydrogen energy equipment to go global, marking the entry of magnesium alloys into the stage of large-scale commercial application in hydrogen energy and creating broad opportunities for the global hydrogen energy industry and magnesium material applications.

Recently, the first semi-solid injection-moulded magnesium alloy seat frame assembly of the Hongqi brand under FAW Group completed assembly, passed functional testing, and entered the full-vehicle validation stage. Through integrated innovation in materials-process-structure, the product consolidated 19 parts into 4 magnesium alloy components, reduced weight by 1.35 kg per assembly, and achieved a 26% weight reduction for the replaced sections. It can be adapted to multiple mass-produced and in-development car models and is compatible with steel parts, significantly lowering industrialisation transition costs. This breakthrough was an important milestone for automotive magnesium alloys moving from the laboratory to mass production. Driven by NEV lightweighting and long driving range demands, the application of magnesium alloys in parts such as the auto body, seats, and electric drive housings accelerated, and the automotive magnesium market entered a period of scaled growth.

Latrobe Magnesium Secures Funding for Commercial Plant via U.S. Distributor Prepayment
[SMM Magnesium Express] Latrobe Magnesium secured a non-dilutive prepayment from U.S. distributor Metal Exchange to advance commissioning of its commercial magnesium plant. The Latrobe Valley facility uses brown coal fly ash as feedstock to produce magnesium ingots and cementitious by-products. The funding signals growing commercial backing for ash-to-magnesium processing, offering an offtake-backed prepayment model for similar projects.

[SMM Analysis] Manganese-based Battery Materials Market Analysis:Cost-driven Divergence with Demand Recovery Ahead
Recently, China's manganese-based battery materials market has been characterized by cost-driven divergence and gradual demand recovery. Battery-grade manganese sulfate and trimanganese tetroxide have strengthened on the back of rising raw material and freight costs; electrolytic manganese dioxide remains stable; and lithium manganate is steady amid volatile lithium carbonate prices, awaiting a demand rebound in April.

Magnesium Market Holds Up Well as Cost Support and the Tug-of-War Between Sellers and Buyers Continues [SMM Magnesium Weekly Review]
[SMM Magnesium Weekly Review: Magnesium Market Held Up Well, With Cost Support and a Tug-of-War Between Sellers and Buyers Continuing] This week, the overall magnesium industry chain held up well, with prices of all products generally raised. The raw material dolomite market remained stable, with ample supply and steady demand. Magnesium ingot prices consolidated at highs. At the beginning of the week, supported by rising energy costs such as ferrosilicon and coke and tight spot availability, prices jumped by 300 yuan/mt. Subsequently, downstream fear of high prices emerged, transactions failed to keep pace, and prices consolidated at highs. In foreign trade, the center of magnesium ingot FOB quotes moved up to $2,440-2,470/mt. Wait-and-see sentiment outside China remained strong, but influenced by bullish expectations in China, forward orders were gradually locked in. Magnesium powder prices remained firm, with strong cost support. Export data increased YoY, while domestic trade was mainly driven by just-in-time procurement. The benchmark price of magnesium alloy held up well, but the release of new capacity led to increased supply, processing fees stayed in the doldrums, and the market showed a pattern of strong supply and weak demand. Overall, cost support remained the core driver behind magnesium prices fluctuating at highs, while downstream acceptance of high prices was limited, and the market may continue this tug-of-war in the short term.
