[IDC: Smartphone Market to Shrink Nearly 13% Due to Storage Chip Shortage]
International Data Corporation (IDC) stated that due to the shortage of memory chips, the global smartphone market will shrink by 12.9% in 2026, which will be an "unprecedented crisis." IDC currently forecasts global smartphone shipments of approximately 1.1 billion units in 2026, down from 1.26 billion units the previous year, erasing years of steady growth. To cope with rising component costs, smartphone manufacturers are cutting specifications, discontinuing entry-level models, and guiding consumers toward higher-end devices. Nabila Popal, Senior Research Director at IDC, said, "We expect the situation will not ease until at least mid-2027.
