【SMM Flash News】Salzgitter Secures €322M Extra Funding for SALCOS Decarbonization

Published: Feb 25, 2026 20:53
German steelmaker Salzgitter AG has received an additional €322 million from the federal government and Lower Saxony to close a financing gap for its SALCOS green steel initiative. This follows a previously approved €1 billion in state aid, bringing total public support to over €1.3 billion. The project aims to replace traditional blast furnaces with hydrogen-based direct reduction plants and electric arc furnaces, powered by a new 100-MW electrolysis plant. Scheduled to begin operations in 2027, the initiative is expected to eliminate nearly 8 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually in Lower Saxony.
