[SMM Iron & Steel] Whyalla Steelworks Magnetite Expansion Project (MEP1) Commences

Published: Feb 25, 2026 11:45
As of February 17, 2026, early works and geotechnical drilling have begun at the Iron Duke mine for the Magnetite Expansion Project (MEP1) in Australia. This project is critical for transitioning the Whyalla Steelworks to "green iron" production.

The expansion aims to produce 2.5 million tonnes of magnetite per year, securing the steelworks' feed for an additional 20 years.

[SMM Analysis] Battery-Grade Mn3O4: Weakness Persisted Before the Holiday, with Further Downside Room Expected After the Holiday
During the 2026 Chinese New Year holiday, the domestic Mn3O4 market continued the weak trend observed before the holiday, characterized by sluggish transactions, stable prices, and a supply-demand stalemate. On the cost side, EMM prices consolidated at lows, lacking upward momentum. On the demand side, the LMO industry had saturated stockpiling before the holiday and focused on destocking. Coupled with the market shutdown during the holiday, these factors further weakened price support. Overall, the Chinese New Year holiday served as a period of accumulating weakness in the market. After the holiday resumption, influenced by both declining raw material costs and weak downstream demand, Mn3O4 prices are highly likely to continue a slight downward trend.

【SMM Steel】The US ITC ruled that revoking AD/CVD duties on carbon/alloy steel wire rods would likely cause material injury to the US industry. The decision follows a sunset review of CVDs on Brazil and ADs on Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico, Moldova, and Trinidad and Tobago.
