【SMM Steel】UK investor eyes British Steel buy to form big EU metals group

Published: Feb 6, 2026 11:14
【SMM Steel】UK investor Michael Flacks is keen to buy British Steel and merge it with an Italian plant to create a major EU metals group. His firm, Flacks Group, is working with bankers to bid for the state-controlled Scunthorpe site. It has struggled amid Chinese oversupply. After multiple ownership changes, the UK govt intervened last year. A buyer must invest heavily to replace old furnaces with EAF tech and tackle £700k daily losses. Flacks is already negotiating to buy Italy's ex-Ilva plant with €5bn funding. The goal is to combine them and leverage European preference for local steel.

【SMM Steel】EU cargo delays rise after CBAM tax starts in 2026
【SMM Steel】Since CBAM entered its tax phase on Jan 1, 2026, goods are held at EU ports due to clearance issues. Importers must be registered CBAM declarants. Common problems: missing declarant status, wrong CBAM codes, no emission data. Non-compliant goods are blocked. CBAM is now a trade access condition. Firms must register, use correct codes, track the 50-ton annual exemption, and set up carbon reporting. While importers are legally responsible, exporters face shipment delays and lost trust. CBAM compliance is key for steel, aluminum, and fastener exports to the EU.

【SMM Steel】Switzerland seeks EU steel import measure exemption
【SMM Steel】Switzerland is seeking an exemption from EU's planned steel import protections. Officials held a special meeting with EU reps in Brussels last week. Switzerland says its steel does not cause overcapacity and is key for regional supply chains and Europe's industrial ecosystem. It also wants exemptions for certain manganese/silicon-based ferroalloy imports and raised concerns about potential EU scrap aluminum export restrictions.
