【SMM PV News】Bulgaria Adds 1.4 GW Solar in 2025

Bulgaria deployed 1,416 MW of solar "last year" (2025), marking its third consecutive year above the 1 GW threshold and pushing cumulative capacity to nearly 6 GW. The market is overwhelmingly dominated by utility-scale projects (90% of additions), which are increasingly being hybridized with battery storage to mitigate price cannibalization—exemplified by major projects like the Tenevo and Selanovtsi hybrid plants. While the residential sector lags due to regulated pricing, the Association for Production, Storage and Trading of Electricity (APSTE) forecasts a record-breaking 2026 with 2.5 GW of solar expected to come online. However, developers face a significant hurdle in the form of recently hiked eco-taxes and recycling fees, which are currently 5 to 10 times higher than EU norms.
