Madagascar lifts 16-year ban on new mining permits, excludes gold

Published: Jan 30, 2026 18:06
The Madagascan government recently announced the lifting of a 16-year moratorium on the issuance of new mining permits that has been in place since 2010. The ban was originally imposed to allow a review of the country’s mining governance and legal framework. Mining is a key pillar of Madagascar’s economy, with major export products including nickel, cobalt, graphite, and ilmenite. As of 2023, around 1,650 applications were still awaiting approval. However, due to major discrepancies between officially reported gold production figures and the scale of artisanal gold mining nationwide, as well as insufficient regulatory and monitoring capacity, the government has decided to maintain the moratorium on gold mining.

[SMM Stainless Steel Flash] Taiwan, China’s Yusco Hikes Stainless Prices for Fifth Straight Month
Yieh United Steel Corp. announced further price increases for April 2026, marking its fifth consecutive monthly hike since December 2025. The mill raised surcharges for 304 and 316L series by NT$4,000/ton, while the 430 series rose by NT$1,500/ton. The cumulative growth for 304 products has now reached NT$19,500 over five months. These adjustments are driven by soaring energy costs amid Middle East tensions and tight supplies of ferrochrome and scrap. Additionally, potential Indonesian nickel export duties and stricter ore controls have pushed NPI prices higher. Combined with TWD exchange rate volatility, these factors necessitated the hike to offset rising production expenses.
