[SMM PV News] Australia Invests AUD 24.7 Million in Solar Recycling Pilot

Published: Jan 26, 2026 10:30
The Australian federal government has announced a AUD 24.7 million investment over three years to establish a national solar recycling pilot with up to 100 collection sites. With 4.2 million rooftop systems installed and roughly 4 million panels decommissioned annually, the country currently recycles only 17% of this waste due to high processing costs that are six times that of landfilling. The program aims to recover critical minerals like silver and copper while laying the groundwork for a future national stewardship scheme. Industry leaders describe the initiative as the start of an ‘urban-mining boom’ that could eventually generate up to $7.3 billion in economic benefits through material reuse.
