UK Clean Power Grid Goal at Risk Due to Delays and Investment Gaps

The UK’s target of achieving a 95% low-carbon electricity grid by 2030 is under threat due to planning delays and infrastructure bottlenecks, according to a House of Lords report. The plan requires rapid expansion of energy generation and grid infrastructure, including at least 43 GW of offshore wind—almost triple the current capacity.

Recent setbacks include Orsted’s cancellation of a major North Sea wind farm and SSE cutting its renewables pipeline by 2 GW, citing poor financial returns. Achieving the goal would require £40 billion ($54 billion) in annual investment. Reform UK has criticized Labour’s net-zero strategy as costly and unrealistic.

The report suggests the government should publish progress metrics every six months and consider switching to a zonal pricing model. This would offer lower tariffs in areas with abundant renewable energy like Scotland and help optimize existing infrastructure, though transitional support may be needed for those unable to adapt.

PV 618 Removed the 80% Hard Cap, Ushering In New Opportunities for the Industry
On June 18, 2026, the National Energy Administration officially implemented the new Guidelines for Assessing the Hosting Capacity of Power Systems for Distributed Power Supply Access, completely abolishing the rigid restriction of an "80% reverse transformer loading rate" that had been in place for six years. This move was of extraordinary significance: it broke the shackles on industry development, released trillion-level market potential, and marked the PV industry’s formal entry into a new stage of development with "no hard cap." The core of this new June 18 policy was "removing hard caps and adopting flexible regulation." This did not mean relaxing power grid safety requirements, but rather using a more scientific approach to balance safety and development.

[SMM PV News] USITC Launches Section 337 Probe into TOPCon Solar Imports After First Solar Complaint
The US International Trade Commission (USITC) has initiated a Section 337 investigation into imports of certain TOPCon solar cells and modules following a patent infringement complaint by First Solar. Filed on February 24, 2026, the complaint targets 47 respondents across the US, China, India, Vietnam, and other nations, including major manufacturers like Canadian Solar, JA Solar, JinkoSolar, and Trinasolar. First Solar alleges these companies infringe on its TOPCon patents and is seeking exclusion and cease-and-desist orders to restrict their sale in the US. Respondents have 20 days to reply. An Administrative Law Judge will issue an initial determination, with the potential to bar offending products from the US market and further disrupt the solar supply chain
