[SMM Analysis: Rare Earth Import and Export Data for March Released, Imports of Rare Earth Metal Ores Expected to Continue Declining] From January to April 2025, China's imports of unlisted rare earth oxides reached approximately 12,849 mt, a 30% YoY decline. Among them, imports of unlisted rare earth oxides in April amounted to around 6,536 mt, showing an approximate 4% YoY increase and a roughly 204% MoM increase.

SMM May 22 News: Recently, the General Administration of Customs released the import and export data for the period from January to April 2025. According to customs data, China's imports of rare earth metal ores totaled 17,614 mt from January to April 2025, down 5% YoY. In April alone, imports reached 3,763 mt, up 18% MoM but down 24% YoY.

In mid-to-late April, MP announced that it would halt exports of rare earth ores to China. However, 3,744 mt of rare earth metal ores still entered China that month. It is understood that current domestic downstream demand remains relatively low, and the increase in ore supply has led to an overall weakening trend in rare earth oxide prices in April.

From January to April 2025, China's imports of unlisted rare earth oxides amounted to approximately 12,849 mt, a 30% decrease YoY. In April, imports of unlisted rare earth oxides reached approximately 6,536 mt, up about 4% YoY and approximately 204% MoM.

It is understood that the supply of rare earth ores in Southeast Asia has fully recovered, with a surge in imports of Myanmar ores in April. The volume of unlisted rare earth oxides from Myanmar increased tenfold MoM, and import activity remained robust in May. However, as the local area is expected to enter the rainy season, it is anticipated that import volumes in this category will begin to decline from June onwards.

From January to April 2025, China's imports of mixed rare earth carbonate totaled 3,412 mt, up 30% YoY. In April, imports reached 1,144 mt, down 26% MoM but up 173% YoY.

Lindian Resources Raises AUD 100M for Rare Earth Projects in Malawi and Kazakhstan
[SMM Rare Earth News Flash] Australian company Lindian Resources raised approximately AUD 100 million through a placement to institutional investors and a strategic critical minerals fund. The proceeds will be used to advance the Kangankunde rare earth project in Malawi and complete the integration of the Sareco mixed rare earth carbonate plant in Kazakhstan. The company acquired a 51% controlling stake in the Sareco plant earlier this year, retaining exclusive sales rights, with the aim of building a vertically integrated rare earth platform. Both the Kangankunde rare earth project and the Sareco plant plan to commence production in Q4 this year.

Arafura Secures $159M Investment for Nolans Rare Earth Project, Aims 4% Global Supply by 2029
[SMM Rare Earth News Flash] Australian company Arafura Rare Earths announced on April 1 that it had signed binding equity subscription agreements with Germany's KfW and Australia's Export Finance Australia (EFA). The two institutions will jointly invest approximately A$230 million (approximately $159 million) to develop the Nolans rare earth project in the Northern Territory. The project plans to supply 4,440 mt of Pr-Nd oxide per year from H2 2029, accounting for approximately 4% of global supply. Arafura has signed an offtake agreement with Siemens Gamesa and is actively seeking European offtake partners to secure an additional 500 mt/year of Pr-Nd oxide capacity.

Greenland Rejects Renewal of Australian Company's Rare Earth Exploration License Due to Uranium Content
[SMM Rare Earth News Flash] Australian company Energy Transition Minerals (ETM) recently stated that its application to renew the exploration license for the Kvanefjeld rare earth project in Greenland had received a draft decision of rejection from the Greenland government, on the grounds that further exploration activities could not lead to the granting of a mining license. The Kvanefjeld project holds 1.14 million mt of rare earth oxide resources, containing high-value elements such as praseodymium, neodymium, dysprosium, and terbium. The Greenland government's decision was primarily based on the 2021 Uranium Act, which prohibits the development of mineral projects with uranium content exceeding 100 ppm, while the Kvanefjeld ore body has a uranium content of 360 ppm.
