Philippines Nickel Ore Exports Surge in Q1 2025 Despite International Price Decline

Published: May 19, 2025 23:46

In the first quarter of 2025, the Philippines saw a strong performance in nickel ore exports, achieving significant growth in export revenue despite the decline in international base metal prices. According to data from the Philippines Statistics Authority, the export value of nickel ore and its concentrates rose markedly compared to the same period last year, reflecting sustained global demand for the country’s resources.

China remained the largest importer of Philippine nickel ore, followed by Indonesia. Additionally, export volumes also increased, underscoring the Philippines’ growing role in the global nickel supply chain.

[SMM Nickel Market Flash] World Bank Sees Nickel Prices Rising 12% in 2026 on Tight Supply
According to the World Bank’s April 2026 Commodity Markets Outlook, nickel prices are projected to rise 12% year on year in 2026 and a further 3% in 2027, as global consumption growth is expected to outpace supply expansion. The report said that although new nickel processing capacity will continue to come online in Indonesia, tighter upstream ore availability is likely to constrain utilization rates and keep the market tight. It also noted that further disruptions to sulfur exports from Middle East producers could become an additional upside risk for nickel prices.
