The US Announces Measures to Boost Domestic Shipbuilding Industry

The Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) announced measures to boost the domestic shipbuilding industry on the 17th local time. Some of the measures include, to encourage US-built car carriers, foreign-built car carriers will be charged a fee based on their capacity 180 days later, starting at $150 per car (CEU). To encourage US-made liquefied natural gas carriers, foreign vessels transporting liquefied natural gas will face limited restrictions after 3 years, and these restrictions will gradually increase over 22 years. No fees will be charged for dry bulk carriers arriving empty at ports to export US goods. All parties must submit feedback on the proposed measures by May 19.
