SMM Flash News: 7.9-Magnitude Earthquake in Myanmar Sparks Market Attention, Minimal Impact on Zinc Industry

【SMM Flash News】On March 28, a 7.9-magnitude earthquake occurred in Myanmar with a focal depth of 30 kilometers. The tremors were strongly felt in Myanmar and Thailand, drawing significant market attention. However, Myanmar is not a major production area for either zinc concentrates or zinc smelters. According to customs data, in 2024, China imported 22,100 mt of zinc concentrates and 4,100 mt of zinc ingots from Myanmar, which accounted for a relatively small proportion overall. Additionally, as Yunnan is located on the border with Myanmar and is a major production area for zinc concentrates and zinc ingots in China, SMM learned that the zinc enterprises are mainly located in eastern Yunnan and have not been affected so far.
