BASF, NIO sign LoI for strategic partnership in automotive coatings field

Shanghai (Gasgoo)- Global coatings leader BASF Coatings and Chinese smart electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer NIO recently signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) to establish a strategic partnership, strengthening collaboration in the field of automotive coatings, according to a post on BASF's WeChat account.

BASF said this agreement marks a significant step toward a long-term, mutually beneficial relationship, with a particular focus on body coatings for NIO's electric vehicles.

The agreement provides a framework for ongoing discussions between the two companies, facilitating annual strategic dialogues to refine the implementation of their partnership. Both sides will work together to build a collaborative platform covering market and customer development, project management, and information exchange.

As part of the partnership, BASF Coatings will supply NIO with a wide range of products tailored to specific technical requirements while also offering value-added services such as color design, color development, digital solutions, sustainability programs, workshops, and industry-leading technical support.

Uta Holzenkamp, President of BASF Coatings, emphasized the significance of this collaboration, stating, "Today's agreement builds on a decade of successful cooperation. With its advanced technology and strong brand identity, NIO has established itself as a leader in the EV sector. We will continue to explore innovative solutions to support NIO in achieving its sustainability goals and future vision."

NIO has selected BASF Coatings as its strategic partner for vehicle body coatings, highlighting the role of this collaboration in advancing shared objectives. Both companies will work together on the development and global application of new coating materials and technologies, contributing to sustainability efforts and carbon neutrality goals.

BASF Coatings, a global expert in the development, production, and sale of innovative and sustainable coatings, provides advanced solutions across OEM coatings, automotive refinish coatings, decorative paints, and surface treatment products for metal, plastic, and glass substrates. In 2024, the division reported global sales of approximately €4.3 billion.
