SMM, February 8:

Recently, the UK-based company Altilium has made significant progress in the field of EV battery recycling, successfully achieving high-efficiency recycling of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, with lithium and graphite recovery rates reaching 97% and 99%, respectively. This breakthrough is critical for the rapid development of the EV market, as the demand for LFP batteries continues to increase.

Through its EcoCathode technology, Altilium converts scrap EV batteries and production waste into sustainable battery precursors, cathode active materials (CAM), and cathode precursors (pCAM), which can be directly used in the production of new batteries. This process is not only efficient but also aligns with new regulatory and sustainability goals.

Dr. Christian Marston, Chief Operating Officer of Altilium, stated that the EcoCathode technology enables the efficient extraction of lithium and graphite, making LFP battery recycling commercially viable and environmentally critical. The company is already operating at its ACT1 and ACT2 facilities in Devon, UK, recycling NMC batteries from two leading UK automakers and Gigafactory production waste to produce modern high-nickel cathode active materials.

Altilium's planned hub in Teesside is expected to become one of Europe's largest EV battery recycling facilities, capable of processing waste from over 150,000 EVs annually and handling various battery chemistries, including LFP.

Opinion

Altilium's breakthrough in EV battery recycling not only demonstrates its leading position in technological innovation but also provides a new direction for sustainable development in the entire EV industry. As the EV market grows rapidly, the importance of battery recycling is becoming increasingly prominent. Altilium's EcoCathode technology not only improves recycling efficiency but also reduces environmental impact, which is crucial for achieving global sustainability goals. Furthermore, the successful application of this technology offers valuable insights for other companies and is expected to drive technological advancement and sustainable development across the industry.

Samsung SDI converts part of U.S. battery joint venture plant to LFP for ESS
Samsung SDI is converting part of the production lines at StarPlus Energy, its U.S. electric vehicle battery joint venture plant, to produce lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries for energy storage systems (ESS). The conversion applies to part of the lines at StarPlus Energy Plant 1. Rather than adding a separate new production line, Samsung SDI is modifying existing high-nickel nickel-cobalt-aluminum (NCA) battery lines to accommodate LFP battery production.
