【Cost Support for Electrodes Used in Silicon Production Continues to Strengthen, but Price Increases Remain Challenging】Under the continued weakness in silicon metal prices, fluctuations in the cost of silicon metal have drawn significant attention. In particular, the price of calcined petroleum coke, a key material in the cost structure of electrodes used in silicon production, has been rising steadily for months. With the strengthening cost support, whether the prices of electrodes used in silicon production will see further increases has become a focal point of attention.

Under the continued weakness in silicon metal prices, fluctuations in silicon metal production costs have drawn significant attention. Particularly, the price of calcined petroleum coke, a key material in the cost structure of electrodes used in silicon production, has been rising steadily for months. With the strengthening cost support, whether the prices of electrodes used in silicon production will increase has become a focal point of concern.

Currently, the prices of electrodes used in silicon production have been stable at low levels for a long time. Affected by the weak silicon metal market downstream, the demand for these electrodes has also declined. At present, the profit margins in the electrode segment are minimal. However, considering the production cycle of electrodes used in silicon production, the impact of fluctuations in overall raw material costs tends to lag. Therefore, the continuous monthly increase in the price of calcined petroleum coke as a raw material for these electrodes will take some time to actually affect the cost of electrodes used in silicon production.

According to feedback from some manufacturers of large-diameter graphite electrodes used in silicon production, the downstream silicon metal market remains weak, and most orders at silicon plants are long-term contracts. This makes it difficult to cancel orders and renegotiate prices. Although cost support from raw materials continues to strengthen, it is feared that actual price increases for electrodes used in silicon production will still face significant challenges. Moreover, most downstream silicon metal enterprises are still operating below the cost line, with very low acceptance of raw material price hikes. As a result, the prices of electrodes used in silicon production are likely to continue operating in a stable trend.

However, as the cost of electrodes used in silicon production continues to rise, if electrode prices remain stable, the electrode segment may gradually enter a loss-making production phase, with production pressure mounting.

[SMM Stainless Steel Daily Review] SS Futures Continued to Pull Back, and Stainless Steel Spot Quotes Were Lowered
[SMM Stainless Steel Daily Review] SS Futures Continued to Pull Back, Stainless Steel Spot Quotes Were Lowered SMM News on March 19: SS futures extended their further downward pullback. Against the backdrop of hawkish remarks from the US Fed and escalating geopolitical conflicts, non-ferrous metal futures generally moved lower, with SS also declining in tandem and closing at 13,935 yuan/mt by the midday break. In the spot market, continued declines in SS futures significantly weakened market confidence; coupled with the recent pullback in high-grade NPI prices, market expectations for cost support also softened. In a market where transactions had already been sluggish this week, inquiries and deals weakened further; in addition, March supply remained high, prompting traders to lower their quotes for 304 stainless steel during the day. However, supported by news yesterday that steel mills were holding prices firm, 200-series stainless steel rose against the trend, with 201 stainless steel prices moving higher. Further attention should still be paid to downstream end-user purchase conditions. The most-traded SS futures contract fell and pulled back. As of 10:15 a.m., SS2605 was quoted at 13,930 yuan/mt, down 100 yuan/mt from the previous trading day. Spot premiums for 304/2B in Wuxi were in the range of 340-540 yuan/mt. In the spot market, the average price of cold-rolled 201/2B coil in Wuxi rose 50 yuan/mt; for cold-rolled trim-edge 304/2B coil, the average price in Wuxi fell 150 yuan/mt and in Foshan fell 50 yuan/mt; cold-rolled 316L/2B coil in Wuxi fell 200 yuan/mt; for hot-rolled 316L/NO.1 coil, Wuxi quotes fell 100 yuan/mt; cold-rolled 430/2... in both Wuxi and Foshan.
