On January 7, 2025, according to foreign media reports, the Indian Ministry of Steel proposed the merger of India's largest iron ore producer—National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC)—with Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Limited (KIOCL), citing KIOCL's inability to conduct mining operations in Devadiri, Karnataka. It is understood that this merger would allow NMDC access to KIOCL's pellet plant with an annual capacity of 4 million mt, which currently holds export permits. Another official stated, "This move will save NMDC several years in establishing a similar facility, enhancing its operational efficiency and export potential."
