SMM January 8 News:

With the continuous advancement of EV technology, the improvement of battery performance, as its core component, is particularly critical. Among various types of batteries, sodium-ion batteries, with their unique advantages, are gradually gaining a foothold in the EV market. Compared to traditional lead-acid batteries and the recently emerging graphene batteries, sodium-ion batteries demonstrate superior performance and cost-effectiveness.

First, in terms of lifespan, sodium-ion batteries significantly outperform lead-acid batteries. Lead-acid batteries have limited charge-discharge cycle times and typically need to be replaced every 2-3 years. In contrast, sodium-ion batteries can achieve over 1,000 charge-discharge cycles, and in some cases, up to 1,500 cycles, with a lifespan of up to 10 years. This means that EV users opting for sodium-ion batteries can avoid frequent battery replacements over a longer period, greatly enhancing convenience.

In terms of energy density, sodium-ion batteries also exhibit remarkable advantages. Their energy density is far higher than that of lead-acid batteries and even approaches or surpasses certain graphene batteries. This allows sodium-ion batteries to store more electricity at the same weight, thereby providing a longer driving range. For EV users, this translates to fewer charging sessions and longer travel distances.

Additionally, sodium-ion batteries excel in low-temperature performance. During cold winters, lead-acid batteries often experience reduced driving range due to lower temperatures. Sodium-ion batteries, however, can retain 95% of their charge in environments as cold as -20°C, ensuring normal EV operation in winter without concerns about reduced driving range.

In terms of charging speed, sodium-ion batteries stand out. Compared to the lengthy 8-hour charging time of lead-acid batteries and the 4-5 hours required by graphene batteries, sodium-ion batteries can charge up to 80% in just 15 minutes, offering the convenience of fast charging. This is undoubtedly a significant benefit for EV users who need frequent charging in daily use.

Regarding cost, although the initial purchase cost of sodium-ion batteries is higher than that of lead-acid batteries, considering their 10-year lifespan and high-performance characteristics, the actual usage cost of sodium-ion batteries is not high. In fact, from a long-term perspective, their cost-effectiveness is even more prominent.

It is also worth mentioning that sodium-ion batteries are easier to maintain. Lead-acid batteries require regular charging to avoid damage caused by over-discharge, whereas sodium-ion batteries can be discharged to 0 volts without affecting the battery, significantly reducing maintenance complexity and frequency.

In summary, sodium-ion batteries, with their long lifespan, high energy density, low-temperature resistance, fast charging, and cost-effectiveness, demonstrate strong competitiveness in the EV market. Although the market share of sodium-ion batteries has not yet fully expanded, with continuous technological advancements and increased consumer awareness, sodium-ion batteries are expected to play a more significant role in the future development of the EV industry. For EV users, choosing sodium-ion batteries is undoubtedly a wise and forward-looking decision.

BAIC R&D Unveils High-Performance Sodium-Ion Battery Prototypes with Industry-Leading Specs
SMM learned that BAIC R&D recently announced the successful development of sodium-ion battery prototypes. The first prismatic battery pack using prismatic battery cells achieved an energy density exceeding 170 Wh/kg, placing it in the industry’s top tier. It also supports 4C ultra-fast charging, enabling recharging in 11 minutes. Its temperature-range adaptability and safety performance are outstanding, with stable operation across an ultra-wide range from -40°C to 60°C, energy retention above 92% at -20°C, and no risk of thermal runaway under extreme scenarios. At present, this sodium-ion battery has completed sample finalization, established mass-production processes for prismatic products, and filed 20 patents around core technologies. BAIC has also leveraged this to complete a full technology roadmap covering lithium batteries, solid-state batteries, and sodium-ion batteries, and has mastered a complete set of core sodium-ion battery technologies.
