Ford and SK On Advance Battery Factory Production to Mid-2025 for E-Vehicles

[Ford and SK Joint Venture Battery Factory Announces Early Production] On August 21th, local time, Ford announced that its BlueOval SK battery factory in Kentucky would commence production in mid-2025, earlier than the original plan. This factory, jointly built by Ford and South Korea's SK On, will produce battery cells for E-Transit vans and F-150 Lightning electric vehicles. Previously, the factory was scheduled to commence production at the end of 2025, but due to adjustments in its electrification strategy, the production timeline has been advanced. The factory will commence trial operations this month, with an anticipated annual production capacity of 45GWh upon completion.

SK Innovation E&S has completed and begun operations of the largest energy storage system (ESS) facility in New York State. According to industry sources on the 31st, its subsidiary KCE launched the KCE NY 6 battery storage facility located on Electric Avenue in Blasdell, Erie County. The project, with a capacity of 20MW (45.6MWh), is the largest single ESS site constructed in New York at the time of its commissioning and is directly connected to the local power grid.

German company, Tozero, announced on March 27 (local time) the official launch of its industrial-scale demonstration plant. The company has built a facility at the Gendorf chemical park in Bavaria, Germany, capable of processing more than 1,500 tons of waste batteries annually. The process enables the recovery of lithium carbonate, graphite, and nickel-cobalt mixtures from spent batteries for reuse as battery raw materials. The plant is expected to recycle resources equivalent to batteries from approximately 6,000 electric vehicles per year, reducing reliance on landfill disposal.
