Escondida Union Accuses BHP of 'Anti-Union' Move, Ends Negotiations Amid Strike

On August 13, 2024, the Escondida union in Chile of BHP accused BHP of presenting contract offers to members before the end of mediation, claiming that this move was an "anti-union" act. Union No.1 of Escondida Copper Mine refused further negotiations, started dismissing striking workers, and activated emergency plans. At present, the copper mine continues to operate. BHP said that it had enough funds to sustain a long-term strike.
