Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry has reportedly put forward the proposal of imposing an anti-dumping duty of up to INR 577 per tonne on aluminium frames originating from China.

Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry has reportedly put forward the proposal of imposing an anti-dumping duty of up to INR 577 per tonne on aluminium frames originating from China.

The news came last week after the Directorate stated the plan, explaining its aim to combat unfair trade practices and protect the domestic aluminium industry from the adverse effects of cheap imports.

The Directorate further alleged that China is flooding the Indian market with its low-quality aluminium frames, which are being sold at prices below fair market value, impacting domestic Indian manufacturers and leading them to face distorted market and financial losses.

The proposed duty intends to make the domestic market more competitive and safeguard India’s manufacturing sector from unfair trade practices.

The proposal has also received immense support from industry stakeholders as it is deemed to enhance market stability and encourage local production, cutting down the influx of undervalued imported aluminium frames from China.

Last year, the Directorate conducted an inquiry for imposing an anti-dumping tariff on imported aluminium alloy wheels from China in response to grievances expressed by the domestic industry for the losses it was facing due to cheap alloy wheel imports from China.

Hulamin has indicated that it will post a loss for the 2025 financial year, pointing to a combination of operational setbacks and unfavourable currency movements ahead of its full-year results due on Monday. The aluminium manufacturer, headquartered in Pietermaritzburg, explained that a prolonged shutdown of its integrated plant formed part of a major project to expand its wide can body capacity. However, this interruption made it challenging to restore consistent mill performance once operations resumed.
