Breakthrough in Sodium Ion Battery Electrolyte: Boosting Cycle Stability by Over 60%

Published: May 8, 2024 17:52
New Progress in Sodium Ion Battery Electrolyte Research" - On May 7th, the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences announced new progress in the research of sodium ion battery electrolyte. The vanadium trifluorophosphate of phosphate-based sodium ion battery has a high theoretical specific energy (507Wh/kg, comparable to lithium iron phosphate). However, vanadium trifluorophosphate-based sodium ion batteries have poor cycle stability due to vanadium dissolution and fluorine loss in the crystal cell, as well as oxidative decomposition of the electrolyte under high voltage. The team first analyzed and proved the root cause of capacity decay, and then through coordinated regulation and optimization, the cycle stability of vanadium trifluorophosphate-based sodium ion batteries within the voltage range of 2 to 4.3V (vs. Na/Na+) was significantly improved, with a capacity retention rate of over 95% after 1,000 cycles at 1C, representing an increase of more than 60% compared to conventional electrolytes. This work provides theoretical basis and support for the development and practical application of high-specific-energy and high-stability sodium ion batteries.

Vietnam Aims to Boost Lithium Battery Supply Chain with Stronger Logistics
Vietnam aims to become a key hub in the global lithium battery supply chain, but needs stronger logistics infrastructure to handle sensitive and hazardous goods like lithium batteries safely and efficiently. Logistics challenges include specialised storage, transport and handling systems, especially through major ports such as Hai Phong and Cai Mep, Thi Vai, where current systems lag behind production growth. Effective logistics is seen as crucial to supporting the country’s ambitions in EV and energy storage exports and attracting further investment in battery manufacturing hubs across Vietnam.
