According to foreign media reports, Giga Storage, a Netherlands-based energy storage system developer, has recently obtained a permit to deploy a 600MW/2400MWh battery energy storage system in Belgium. The project is named Giga Green Turtle. Obtaining the permit indicates that the financing for this largest-scale battery energy storage project in Europe can be arranged. The project is located adjacent to a 380kV high-voltage distribution station operated by the transmission system operator Elia. The deployment site is an abandoned zinc plant, and before Giga Storage purchased it from the zinc plant owner, another energy developer had plans to deploy a battery energy storage system there. The project will consist of 20 battery energy storage systems (each equipped with an inverter), as well as 185 medium-voltage transformers and 5 high-voltage transformers. Giga Storage stated that the electricity stored in the Giga Green Turtle battery energy storage project can meet the power needs of 330,000 households for one year. The project is expected to start construction in 2025 and be completed by 2028. Giga Storage Company stated that the project will play a key role in the energy transition in Belgium and Europe.

BAIC R&D Unveils High-Performance Sodium-Ion Battery Prototypes with Industry-Leading Specs
SMM learned that BAIC R&D recently announced the successful development of sodium-ion battery prototypes. The first prismatic battery pack using prismatic battery cells achieved an energy density exceeding 170 Wh/kg, placing it in the industry’s top tier. It also supports 4C ultra-fast charging, enabling recharging in 11 minutes. Its temperature-range adaptability and safety performance are outstanding, with stable operation across an ultra-wide range from -40°C to 60°C, energy retention above 92% at -20°C, and no risk of thermal runaway under extreme scenarios. At present, this sodium-ion battery has completed sample finalization, established mass-production processes for prismatic products, and filed 20 patents around core technologies. BAIC has also leveraged this to complete a full technology roadmap covering lithium batteries, solid-state batteries, and sodium-ion batteries, and has mastered a complete set of core sodium-ion battery technologies.
