[SMM analysis] Glass prices to increase further in April

Published: Apr 2, 2024 17:45
Last week was the traditional price negotiation period for new orders. The price of photovoltaic glass stabilized. The price of 2.0mm single-layer coated glass is 15.8-16.5 yuan/square meter, and the price of 3.2mm single-layer coated glass is 25.5-26.0 yuan/square meter.

The mainstream transaction prices are 16.0 and 25.5 yuan/square meter respectively. There were no transactions in the market last week. Most companies have negotiated the price and volume of April orders. The demand remains at a relatively high level and glass transactions remain promising.

The demand for photovoltaic glass downstream modules has continued to rise recently, and terminal installed capacity has also increased slightly. The overall demand has recovered. The recent production of modules has also increased compared with the previous period. Monthly production scheduling data continues to rise. SMM statistics predict that domestic photovoltaic module production schedule will also reach more than 55GW in April, and glass demand will continue to remain high. On the domestic glass supply side, although there were 3,200 tons/day of new kilns commenced in China in March, calculated based on monthly output, the supply barely meets demand. Module companies have begun to stock up on glass. According to incomplete statistics from SMM, domestic glass stocking volume reached about 10GW in March. Based on the current production schedule, glass supply will fall short of demand in two months and prices are expected to rise.

SMM believes that glass prices will rise in April, with an increase of approximately 1-1.5 yuan/square meter, which is a relatively large increase. The main reason is that the current demand for modules is good, and the stockpiling has increased. The transaction volume has increased rapidly. It is expected that glass prices will rise in April and May.

Large-Scale PV Project in Laos Completed Registration in the Yunnan Power Market
The project is located in Oudomxay Province in northern Laos and was invested in and constructed by China General Nuclear Power Group. It was Laos’s first large-scale PV project. The project was officially commissioned at the end of 2025 and is expected to generate about 1.7 billion kWh of electricity annually on average. As an important supporting power supply for the China-Laos 500-kV transmission line for power interconnection, the clean electricity generated by the project will be transmitted to Yunnan through the China-Laos 500-kV interconnection project, supporting Yunnan’s energy transition and power supply security.

[SMM PV News] Slovakia Adds 243 MW of Solar in 2025
Slovakia installed 243 MW of solar in 2025, pushing its cumulative capacity to 1,357 MW. The additions were driven primarily by the residential sector (124 MW) and the 'C&I' market (102 MW), heavily supported by the 'green for households' scheme and the Resilience and Recovery ('RRF') facility. The Slovak Association of the Photovoltaic Industry ('SAPI') forecasts between 250 MW and 300 MW of new capacity in 2026, fueled by new 'green for businesses' funding and utility-scale projects racing to meet the June 2026 'RRF' subsidy deadline.

[SMM PV News] GCL Secures 1.2 MW Commercial Perovskite Tandem Module Order from Huaneng
GCL Optoelectronics has won a 1.2 MW procurement project from China Huaneng Group for commercial-grade perovskite/silicon 'HJT' tandem modules. Slated for delivery by June 2026, the tender strictly demands mass-producible modules with over 26% efficiency and full 'IEC' certification. Marking a major industry milestone, Huaneng noted this is the first public commercial perovskite tandem procurement among China's top five state-owned power generators.
