Bechtel to Lead Engineering for New US Primary Aluminum Smelter in Oklahoma

Published: Feb 10, 2026 09:25
[SMM Aluminum Express News] Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) and Century Aluminum have selected Bechtel to lead engineering for a new primary aluminum smelter in Inola, Oklahoma—the first new U.S. primary aluminum smelter since 1980. The project could potentially double America's current primary aluminum production capacity. Bechtel is collaborating with sustainability firm ERM to handle permitting, environmental reviews, regulatory compliance, and community engagement. The announcement supports U.S. efforts to reshore critical metals production amid growing demand for domestic aluminum in electrification, defense, and infrastructure.
