[SMM Stainless Steel Daily Review] SS short-term maintains a relatively stable consolidation pattern; stainless steel spot prices stable, end-users cautiously wait and see On July 15, SMM reported that SS futures showed a relatively stable consolidation pattern. SS futures pulled back in the night session, but after the morning open, the decline was partially recovered, then moved sideways until the close, with the most-traded SS contract settling at 14,595 yuan/mt. Spot market side, demand was in the off-season, and recent volatility intensifies in SS futures with no clear directional guidance, so downstream end-users held a strong wait-and-see sentiment, overall transactions were sluggish; spot prices were largely stable, with only some traders under shipment pressure occasionally releasing low-priced goods. SS futures most-traded contract. At 10:15 a.m., SS2608 reported at 14,660 yuan/mt, up 120 yuan/mt from the previous trading day. Spot premiums for 304/2B in Wuxi area were in the 260-610 yuan/mt range. According to SMM on July 15, SS futures showed an overall pattern of steady consolidation. During the night session, SS futures fell and pulled back, but the decline was partly recovered after the morning opening, and then it moved sideways. As of the close, the most-traded SS contract settled at 14,595 yuan/mt. In the spot market, demand was in the off-season at the time, coupled with recent intensified volatility in SS futures and a lack of clear directional guidance, leading to strong wait-and-see sentiment among downstream end-users and overall sluggish transactions. Spot prices were largely stable, with only occasional low-priced supplies flowing out from traders facing shipment pressure.

The Most-Traded SS Futures Contract. At 10:15 AM, SS2608 quoted at 14,660 yuan/mt, up 120 yuan/mt from the previous trading day. Spot premiums for 304/2B in Wuxi were in the range of 260-610 yuan/mt. In the spot market, the average price of cold-rolled 201/2B coils in Wuxi was unchanged; for cold-rolled edge-rolled 304/2B coils, the average price in Wuxi rose by 25 yuan/mt, while that in Foshan held steady; the price of cold-rolled 316L/2B coils in Wuxi dropped by 100 yuan/mt; for hot-rolled 316L/NO.1 coils, the Wuxi quotation held steady; cold-rolled 430/2B coils in both Wuxi and Foshan were flat.

During the week, macro capital disturbances intensified, and stainless steel futures trended independently on a weak note, with its price movements significantly decoupled from the pace of SHFE nickel and other base metals. Within the week, alternating capital sentiment drove SS futures into wild swings; the earlier key support level of 14,500 yuan/mt was broken, and the overall trend center moved persistently lower, leading to a generally pessimistic trading sentiment. On the spot and inventory front, the break-down and weakening of futures continued to weigh on the spot market, with bearish fundamentals in the off-season being released in a concentrated way. At the time, the market entered the traditional consumption off-season, with inherently weak terminal demand; coupled with the sustained decline in futures further denting market confidence, wait-and-see sentiment dominated among downstream end-users, and purchase willingness remained weak. During the week, mainstream steel mills ended their earlier strategy of holding prices firm, proactively lowering spot guidance prices, which led to a simultaneous pullback in market spot quotations. Transactions in the market showed a pattern of periodic pulse-like releases followed by rapid cooling, with a severe lack of sustained rigid demand, and overall trading returned to a sluggish pattern. Against the backdrop of weak terminal purchases and obstructed destocking, the pace of inventory buildup in the market accelerated notably, social inventory continued to pile up, and pressure on spot fundamentals became more prominent. On the cost and profit side, finished steel and raw material prices fell in tandem during the week; steel mill smelting profits narrowed slightly but remained positive. Affected by the pullback in spot prices and pressure on finished steel profitability, mainstream steel mills lowered their procurement expectations for raw materials, releasing NPI purchase prices at low levels, which caused high-grade NPI market prices to fall in tandem, along with a simultaneous pullback in stainless steel scrap purchase prices, thus shifting the overall raw material cost center downward. Steel mill profits were slightly compressed MoM, but the industry overall did not incur losses, and production profit resilience persisted. Overall, this week the stainless steel market presented a weak pattern of futures breaking below key levels, spot prices following lower and loosening, inventory accelerating buildup, and profits shrinking slightly. Macro capital disturbances dominated the independent weakening of futures, while off-season demand weakness, steel mills' retreat from holding prices firm, and inventory accumulation were the core bearish factors for spot. The weak market pattern is difficult to reverse in the short term. Futures continue to consolidate on a subdued note, and spot prices remain under pressure.

[SMM Stainless Steel Daily Review] Capital Flows and SHFE Nickel Resonance Propel SS Futures; Spot Stainless Steel Demand Remains Weak According to SMM news on July 14, SS futures showed a strengthening and upward trend. Driven by the strengthening of SHFE nickel during the night session, combined with the impact of SS's own capital flow fluctuations, SS rebounded quickly after the night session opened, and then maintained a generally strong consolidation pattern. As of the midday close, the most-traded SS contract settled at 14,565 yuan/mt. In the spot market, boosted by SS's stop falling and strengthening, spot quotations recovered from yesterday afternoon's decline, low-priced sources in the market decreased, some traders raised their quotations, downstream end-user clients remained in a wait-and-see sentiment, and transactions remained mediocre overall. The most-traded SS futures contract. At 10:15 a.m., SS2608 was reported at 14,540 yuan/mt, up 210 yuan/mt from the previous trading day. Spot premiums for 304/2B in Wuxi were in the 330-730 yuan/mt range. In the spot market, the average price of cold-rolled 201/2B coil in Wuxi was flat; for cold-rolled raw edge 304/2B coil, the average price in Wuxi held steady, and the average price in Foshan held steady; the price of cold-rolled 316L/2B coil in Wuxi was flat; for hot-rolled 316L/NO.1 coil, the Wuxi quotation was flat; and cold-rolled 430/2B coil in both Wuxi and Foshan was flat. This week, macro capital flow disturbances intensified, and stainless steel futures moved in an independent weak trend, with market movements significantly diverging from the rhythm of SHFE nickel and other nonferrous metals. During the week, capital sentiment switched repeatedly, causing SS futures to swing wildly. The key support level of 14,500 yuan/mt was breached earlier, and the overall trend center continued to...

[SMM Stainless Steel Daily Review] SS Futures Move Sideways Under Pressure Amid Off-Season Demand Weakness; Spot Prices Hold Steady but Sentiment Stays Pessimistic According to SMM on July 13, SS futures showed a consolidation pattern. The non-ferrous metals futures overall consolidated on a subdued note, with SS extending its earlier weak performance within a limited range. By the midday close, the most-traded SS contract settled at 14,315 yuan/mt. In the spot market, dragged down by low-level SS futures and the traditional off-season, end-use demand remained persistently sluggish. Stainless steel mills kept their guidance prices flat, and most traders held their quotes steady for the time being, though market sentiment leaned toward a pessimistic and subdued tone. SS futures, the most-traded contract. At 10:15 a.m., SS2608 was reported at 14,330 yuan/mt, down 15 yuan/mt from the previous trading day. Spot premiums for 304/2B in Wuxi stood in the 540–940 yuan/mt range. In the spot market, the average price for cold-rolled 201/2B coil in Wuxi dropped 50; cold-rolled unedged 304/2B coil average prices remained flat in Wuxi and Foshan; cold-rolled 316L/2B coil prices in Wuxi rose 100 yuan/mt; for hot-rolled 316L/NO.1 coil, Wuxi quotes held flat; and cold-rolled 430/2B coil prices stayed unchanged in both Wuxi and Foshan. This week, heightened macro liquidity disturbances led SS futures to move in an independently weak trend, with the futures markedly decoupling from SHFE nickel and other non-ferrous metals in their movement pace. During the week, repeated shifts in fund sentiment triggered wild swings in SS futures. The key support level at 14,500 yuan/mt was breached earlier, and the overall trend center continued to shift lower. The broader market…

Raw material prices generally pull back, unable to reverse the narrowing of stainless steel mill profits [SMM Analysis]
[SMM Analysis] Raw Material Prices Generally Pull Back, Fail to Alleviate Narrowing Stainless Steel Mill Profits Stainless steel prices and production costs both declined this week, squeezing steel mill profit margins. Using 304 cold-rolled products as the calculation benchmark, the profit margin based on current raw material costs stood at 1.71%, while the margin based on inventory cost accounting was 0.48%. On the nickel-based raw material cost side, high-grade NPI prices exhibited a falling and pulling back trend this week. SS futures continued to pull back during the week, drastically increasing cost pressure on China's stainless steel mills. Coupled with pessimistic market expectations for the near term, the low purchase tender price for high-grade NPI announced by a major stainless steel mill drove a broad decline in psychological price levels for market-wide purchases. However, upstream suppliers maintained a relatively strong willingness to hold prices firm, creating significant divergence between upstream and downstream players, leaving transactions mired in a sluggish pattern. As of this Friday, the imported price including tax for Indonesian high-grade NPI with 10%-12% nickel grades fell by 6 yuan per nickel unit, settling at 1,137 yuan/mtu. In the stainless steel scrap market, stainless steel scrap prices drifted lower this week. Dragged down by the decline in SS futures and mills' low high-grade NPI tender prices, overall market sentiment was pessimistic. Mills adopted a cautious purchasing stance, trading activity remained insufficient, and the price center continued to shift downward. Although stainless steel scrap still held an economic advantage over NPI, this could not offset the impact of sluggish end-use demand and pessimistic expectations. Under the resonance of multiple negative factors, the cost support role failed, and prices are likely to continue consolidating on a weak note in the short term. As of this Friday, mainstream 304 off-cuts prices in Shanghai fell by 250 yuan/mt, with the latest quotation at approximately 10,150 yuan/mt. From the chromium-based raw material cost side, high-carbon ferrochrome prices remained stable this week...
