[SMM Analysis] Weakening Cost Support Drives Nickel Salt Prices Lowe

Published: Jun 25, 2026 13:50
As of this Thursday, the SMM battery-grade nickel sulphate average price declined.

Demand side, at the mid-year reporting period, the downstream sector mainly focused on consuming inventories this week, with weak stockpiling sentiment and low acceptance of nickel salt prices. Supply side, MHP payables and auxiliary material prices remained high, but the sharp drop in nickel prices this week still impacted the cost support for nickel salts, with some producers releasing previous inventories. Looking ahead, expectations of tight nickel sulphate raw material supply have not yet improved, and attention should be paid to the cost support strength of nickel prices and intermediate products on nickel salt prices.

In terms of inventory, this week, the inventory index of upstream nickel salt smelters slipped from 8.5 days to 8.2 days, the inventory index of downstream precursor plants fell from 10.9 days to 9.9 days, and the inventory index of integrated enterprises remained at 7.0 days. Regarding the balance of buying and selling, the Willingness to Sell Sentiment Factor of upstream nickel salt smelters stayed at 1.8, the purchasing sentiment factor of downstream precursor plants stayed at 2.5, and the sentiment factor of integrated enterprises stayed at 2.4. [SMM Market Flash] Glencore Sudbury Nickel Operations Team Wins 2026 Ontario Mine Rescue Championship
Glencore Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations (INO) mine rescue team won the overall champion title at Ontario Mine Rescue 2026 competition, which ended 12 June in Sudbury, beating seven other provincial teams. The mock-emergency scenario, staged at Magna Mining Podolsky Mine—a historical property under care and maintenance—simulated teenagers trespassing into an abandoned site, testing teams on oxygen-deficient air, opioid-overdose response with Narcan, rope rescue and a vehicle fire using a Compressed Air Foam System. This is a workplace-safety and community item with no nickel market or pricing relevance.

[SMM Nickel Market Flash] DKFT to File July RKAB Revision for More Ore Quota, Keeps 9.5% Profit Growth Target
PT Central Omega Resources (DKFT), an Indonesian nickel miner, told the IDX it will submit an RKAB revision in July to secure additional nickel ore quota, after its initial 2026 allocation was cut by about 35%. The company still targets 9.5% net profit growth to IDR 629 billion for 2026, and has trimmed its ore sales target to 1.9 million mt from 3.02 million mt realized in 2025, while optimizing output toward 4 million mt. In Q1 2026, ore output fell about 44% YoY and sales about 19%, yet revenue rose around 20% to IDR 506 billion and net profit jumped 72.9% to IDR 238 billion—price and margin gains offsetting RKAB-driven volume cuts. The July RKAB outcome is the swing factor for the full-year target.

[SMM Nickel Market Flash] Fathom Nickel Finds Two New Ni-Cu-Co Zones at Gochager Lake; Assays Due in August
Fathom Nickel (CSE: FNI) said Phase-2 drilling at its Gochager Lake project in Saskatchewan, Canada, identified two new zones of gabbro-hosted nickel-copper-cobalt mineralization, roughly 100 meters northeast and 150 meters southwest of the historic deposit. The intercepts, guided by borehole electromagnetic (BHEM) targeting, carried visible pentlandite and chalcopyrite in semi-massive to disseminated sulphides, consistent with the historic deposit style. With about two-thirds of the 3,000-meter program done, drilling is set to wrap by 30 June, with assays due in early August. Grades are not yet reported, so the result is a footprint expansion rather than a resource update; the August assays are the next catalyst for this North American magmatic-sulphide explorer.
