[Dutch prosecutors to take Tata Steel to court over IJmuiden emissions]

Published: Jul 14, 2026 16:47
Dutch prosecutors will bring Tata Steel's IJmuiden plant to court on November 20, 2026, accusing it of endangering public health through hazardous emissions. The state alleges the steelmaker neglected equipment maintenance at aging coke ovens, operated without permits, and failed to report pollution incidents. The legal action stems from a 2021 petition by 800 local residents. Tata Steel argues it has already invested €300m in upgrades and plans to close two coke ovens by 2027, but prosecutors say these measures are insufficient. The Dutch parliament conditionally approved €200m in additional support for the company's decarbonization plan in June 2026.
