Nissan Begins Solid-State Battery Development, Aims to Reduce Costs with Sulfur-based Materials

Published: Jun 5, 2026 14:32

According to EV media outlet Electrek on June 4 local time, Nissan is launching a project to develop “Cost-effective, Resilient Solid-state Li-S” batteries together with UK battery company Gelion, Nissan Technical Centre Europe (NTCE) and the University of Oxford.

The project will run for three years, with a total budget of around GBP 3.4 million, or about USD 4.5 million. Of this, Gelion will receive around GBP 2.4 million, or about USD 3.2 million, in UK government funding.

The key focus of the project is the development of solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries using sulfur-based cathode materials.

Helios Horizon Completes First Crewed Solid-State Battery Flight
On June 5, 2026, Helios Horizon achieved the world’s first crewed fixed-wing flight powered by solid-state batteries. The test validated solid-state technology in real aviation conditions, showing a 60% energy density improvement (410 Wh/kg) and 15‑minute fast charging. While cost and certification remain challenges, the milestone recalibrates industry expectations and offers a clearer path forward for electric aviation.

【Phosphorus Chemicals: Wengfu Raises Wet-Process 85% Phosphoric Acid Price by RMB 500 to RMB 12,100/ton】 On June 15, 2026, according to SMM, Wengfu increased its ex-factory price for wet-process 85% phosphoric acid by RMB 500 to RMB 12,100/ton. Driven by sharp fluctuations in sulfur prices, this hike is intended to ease tight supply pressures and curb downstream demand. A total of 800,000 tonnes of capacity at the Dazhou and Shanghang bases remain offline. Outlook: Significant geopolitical influences are expected to keep prices volatile in the short term. The rise in phosphoric acid prices further pushes up production costs for iron phosphate and lithium iron phosphate (LFP).
